UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. CASE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
REDUCTION-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 276,132, dated April 17, 1883,
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reduction-lilachines, of which the following is a description.
The object of my invention is to provide a more compact machine, by which different grades of grain can be quickly reduced, instead of having different machines adapted for various kinds.
In myinvention I use three horizontal rolls, preferably hollow. The middle roll is stationary, and the two outer rolls break against it. The middle roll is provided with differentlydressed surfaces. Two opposite portions of its surface are smooth, and are used in grinding very hard wheat. Otheropposite portions of the surface have coarse, blunt corrugations for ordinary wheat, and other opposite portions of the surface have fine, sharp corrugations for very dry or wet wheat. This construction of roll, against which the outside rolls can work, enables a miller to make the largest possible amount of middlings with the different kinds of wheat in a single machine.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved three-roll reduction-machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
A represents the framing, and B the inner casing, of the machine. C D E are three rolls, preferably hollow, having journals 0 0 (Z d e e, mounted in bearing-blocks F F G G H H on the framing. On the extended journals 0 c of the outer rolls, .0 E, are keyed pulleys I I, adapted to be engaged by suitable belting connected with means for rapidly revolving these rolls in the direction indicated by the arrows. D is the middle roll, stationary, though adapted to be adjusted to present its differently-dressed surfaces to the outer rolls. The surface of this roll (see Fig. 2) consists of smooth portions 01' d, coarse, blunt corrugations d d, and fine, sharp teethd (1, the corrugations and teeth projecting downwardly on each side of the roll when arranged for work. The outer rolls, C E, are formed with toothed surfaces 0 e for breaking against the stationary roll.
J J are the feed-boxes I prefer to use, having slides jj, and mounted on the top of the casing.
The casing B is provided with three partitions, b b I), located directly over each roll, and forming chambers b 1), into which the grain is fed, thrown toward the central par tition, and spread on the stationary roll by coming in contact with the tops of the outer rapidly-rotated rolls. The direction of the grain in passing through the chambers is shown by arrows. ,The outer partitions, b, are hinged to permit access to the chambers b b.
I reserve the right to claim in another application the means herein shown for automatically feeding the grain, and the means for shifting, adjusting, regulating, and cushioning the rolls.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a reduction-machine, the combination of three horizontal rolls, the middle roll being stationaryand the two outside rolls adapted to work against it, as set forth.
2. In a reduction-machine, the combination of three rolls, the middle roll being provided with differently-dressed surfaces, as set forth.
3. In a reduction-maohine, the combination of three rolls, the middle stationary roll being formed with smooth portions on opposite sides thereof,'as set forth.
4. In a reduction-machine, the combination of three rolls, the middle stationary roll being formed with coarse, blunt corrugations on opposite sides of the roll, as set forth.
5.. In a reduction-machine, the combination of three rolls, the middle stationary roll being formed with fine, sharp corrugations on opposite sides of the roll, as set forth.
6. In a reduction-machine, the combination of three rolls, the middle stationary roll having a series of duplicate difierentlydressed surfaces on opposite sides of the said roll, as set forth.
7. Amiddie roll having series of teeth pointing in opposite directions on opposite sides of the roll, in combination with two outside rolls with teeth in opposite directions to work against the teeth of the said middle roll, as set forth.
JOHN M. CASE. Witnesses:
W. N. TULLER, T. H. McGoY.
