MONROE JONES, OF EAST S AGINAW, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIDER MILLS AND PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,536, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE JONES, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cider-Mills; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cider-mill, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan View, of my cider-mill. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same taken through the line A B, Fig.
Z represents the frame-work of my machine arranged upon or above the vats L and M, and constructed in any suitable manner to receive the various parts of which the machine is composed. A represents the hopper for receiving the apples, and from which they pass on to an elevator, B, to be carried up and deposited in the hopper 0 on top of the machine. From this hopper O the apples pass downward to and between two smooth rollers, D. D, which are placed a suitable distance apart for the purpose ofproperly crushing the apples. From these rollers the apples pass downward to and between two other smooth rollers, F F, which are placed a suitable distance apart to properly reduce the crushed apples received from the rollers D D to a pomace suitable for pressing. The distance between the rollers D D, as well as between the rollers F F, is readily regulated by means of set-screws P P, as shown in Fig.1. The rollers D D and F F are grooved circumferentially near the ends, and side pieces E E are fitted in said grooves so as to prevent the apples, pomace, or cider, from passing over the ends of said rollers. The rollers D D, as well as F F, are connected by cog-gearing and receive their motion by means of belts from pulleys 1 and 3 on a driving-shaft, the belt from the pulley 3 also operating the elevator B. The rollers F F are cleared of the pomace as they pass around by means of scrapers H H, as shown in Fig. 3. From the rollers F F the pomace falls on a canvas-belt, I, which conveys it to and between two rollers, J J, which are set a suitable distance apart for the purpose of pressing the cider out of the pomace. wheels and receive their motion by a belt from the main driving-shaft, said belt also operat ing the rollers K, around which the endless belt I is placed and held taut. The rollers J J are provided with scrapers N O for clearing them of pomace or cider, and the upper roller of the two has over its journals rubber-packing R, with set-screws Q for the purpose of tightening the same and still allow it to yield slightly if necessary. The vat L receives the cider and the vat M the pomace from the rollers J J. The apples in my machine being crushed with smooth rollers prevents the fine pomace from mixing with the cider, inasmuch as there can be no very fine pomace made by crushing in this manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Ina cider-mill, the combination of. two pairs of smooth rollers for crushing and reducing the apples to pomace, and one pair of similar rollers for pressing the cider out of the pomace, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, in a cider-mill, of an elevator, B, with the hopper and rollers, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
MONROE JONES.

These rollers are also connected by gear-
