Description
TATES SAMUEL CHARD, OF MIANUS, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,910, dated November 17, 1874; application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. SAMUEL CHARD, of Mianus, Fairlield county, Connecticut, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Elastics, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a simple, cheap, and effective elastic for fastenin g stockings below the knee, and for all other purposes for which it may be adapted; and it consists in an outside spring-band and an in side adjustingband, severed at one point, and connected together as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an edge view of the elastic. Fig. 2 is a side view, with the outer or spring band broken away, as seen looking from the line a: m, Fig. 1, to show the inner band.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the outer or spring band. B is the inner or adjusting band. The springband is formed of one piece of metal, or similar material, bent in circular form, with its ends curved or turned inward, substantially as seen at C. The band B is made of any suitable pliable material, as woven wire-gauze, attached to the curved ends of the outer spring A, as seen at C, so that, being pliable itself, it will be controlled by the outer spring'band and adjust itself snugly to the limb of the wearer. This inner band will be made a little less in circumference than the limb which it is designed to clasp. It is placed over the top of the stocking, and exerts, through the spring-band, a gentle pressure sufficient to hold the stocking securely to the leg.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A garter composed of an outer rigid elastic band, A, and a flexible band, B, of woven wire or its equivalent, constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
