UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NIELB P. BACH, 0F MILLBURN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 THERMOKEPT CQRPGRA- TION, A CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE. f
SEALED VACUUM CGNTAINER.
Application led July 15, 1822.
This invention relates to containers, and in particular to that class of containers.
wherein the contents are vacuum sealed and which have special provisions for the convenience and comfort of the user.
Further objects include the provision of a container, or receptacle, which maybe cheaply made, but which is neat in appearance, convenient to carry, easily opened and quickly adjusted for use.
Another object includes the provision of means for readily opening a predetermined part of the container.
Another object provides for a special ypredetermined opening. c
Another object provides for a container which is so constructed as to admit quick and easy conversion from a vacuum sealed receptacle to a usable and convenient safety sealed rece tacle. l
A still urther object includes the provision of ready means for opening and closing the predetermined opening.
@ther objects will appear hereinafter, and I attain these objects by the construction and means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a view in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a view taken yon lines 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown 1n Fig. l, with the vacuum seal broken, and partly opened;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on lines 4-4 of Fi 3;
1g. 5 is a view in the receptacle open; an
Fig. 6 is a view showing a portion of the closing slide.
Like numerals refer to similar parts in the several views.
It is among the prime objects of my in vention to produce a tobacco box which embraces the aforesaid characteristics and advantages. It is also of prime importance (perspective showing Aof suitable diameter for t Serial No. 575,25*?.
that the box be of such size and shape that 1t may be conveniently carried by the user in his pocket, and that it be provided with. means for quickly and readily transforming it from a vacuum sealed box to a safety closed box from which the contents can bte conveniently talren as required. In order to combinev the advantages offered by a vacuum sealed container whicli; meets the herein outlined, or other neces-V sary and essential requirements, and still be capable of being sealed in vacuo, l have found a dat circular container, or box, best suited, as it offers a uniformly curved sealing edge and the necessary support for the sealing machine to make a perfect vacuuui. seal., n
l am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to seal tobacco in vacuo; also that containers have been made with means whereby an opening therein may be opened and closed at will. But li am not aware that the ,invention and combination herein described and claimed has ever been sugguested or that it has been effected in practicec By my invention it is possible to vacuum seal goods in a container to be kept for an indefinite period of time and under quite adverse conditions and then, at any moment, it is possible to convert said vacuum sealed container into a usable and convenient safety sealed container, by
4merely giving the specific key a few turns andV thus laying open the container at a lpredetermined place and for a predetermined space, as circumstances may require. Referring now to the drawing,wherein I have shown a specific embodiment of my invention, as an example, the container 10 may be of any desired size or dimensions. If said container is intended for pocket use, as for tobacco, it is referably flat and lie intended pocket. If other commodities are to be sealed therein, the dimensions of the container may vary with the anticipated or designed use.
The side wall l1 of the container is usually made from a single piece of suitable sheet metal as tin plate or the like, and
it is provided with parallel scorings 12,
ywhich terminate at 13, thus. forming with the lip la, the removable tongue piece 15. The side wall piece is shaped in the usual l leaving a lip 14, extending therebeyond and illl free for attachment of' an opening key 17. The bottom 18 and top cover 19 are'providedin the usual manner for this class of cans, and the top is sealed under vacuo, after the can is filled.
From this description it is apparent that by applying key 17 to lip 14, and giving the Ykey a Vfew turns, the tongue piece 15 Will be detached in the manner Yillustrated in VFigs. Briand 4, thus breaking the vacuum seal, and forming the opening 2() in the wall of the container.
To provide for the safety seal there is supplied Within the inside of the container a slidable collar 21. rlhis collar consists of a piece of flexible sheet metal not unlike the outer wall of the container, and of sufficient height to easily fit between the covers, and long enough to overlap when in position, as is shown best in Fig. 2. This collar is further provided with an opening22 of substantially the same position and dix mensions as the formed opening with container Wall. For convenience in moving the collar, a thumb piece 23 is provided, which piece, after the tongue is removed, lies in the opening 20, and protrudes just far enough to be readily reached.
rlFhe operation will be readily understood from this disclosure. The container having been filled and then sealed under vacuo, may be kept for future use without deterioration or loss of flavor or quality of the sealed goods. The relative position of the sealing collar to the side Wall of the container is best shown in Fig. 2. lf it is now desired to break the vacuum and open the container, the key is applied as outlined above, and when the tongue piece is removed, the thumb piece will position itself in the opening thus made. lf the container is a tobacco box and contains smoking tobacco, the collar is moved to the necessary extent to permit the contents of the box to be shaken into the bowl of a pipe, for example. After the pipe has been filled, thel opening is closed by `movlng the collar piece back to its origmal position= lt is apparent that the construction of my box with its V-end opening a'or-ds easy and convenient means for filling a pipe bowl, if that is the applied use.
1W hile ll have described a specific construction, and applied my invention to a specific embodiment, l do not thereby desire to be understood as thus limiting myself unnecessarily, as various modifications falling Wholly- Within the spirit and scope of my invention Will obviously present themselves to those versed in the art.
n Whatql claim, therefore, as new and useral, and of my own invention, ltfre to secure by Letters Retent, is:
1. A container for sealing under vacuo comprising a body and covers sealed thereon to form a sealedcontainer, a second body having an opening cooperating With said firstnbody, and means for converting said sealed container into a safety container.
2. A container for sealing under vacuo, comprising a container body having means for converting said sealed container into a safety container, and means for effecting the opening or the closing of said safety container.
3. A container for sealing under vacuo, comprising a receptacle having a cylindrical side Wall, an inner collar lining the inner side of said Wall, and means for breaking said seal to expose a portion of said lining.
4. A container for sealing under vacuo, comprising a receptacle havinv a cylindrical side Wall, an inner collar lining the inner side of said Wall, means for removing a predetermined piece from said side wall and an extension on the inner collar.
A container capable of being sealed under vacuo, comprising a receptacle having a cylindrical side wall, an inner collar lining the inner side of said wall, said collar being provided with an opening, means for forming an opening in said side Wall, a thumb piece on the inner collar adjacent said collar opening and extending into said formed opening for moving said inner collar.
6. As an article of manufacture, a vacuum sealed container of greater diameter than height having an inner movable collar lin ing the side Wall of said container, said collar being provided With an opening, means for exposing a portion of said lining, and means on said lining for moving the same to and fro.
7. As an article of manufacture, a vacuum sealed container having an inner movable collar lining the side Wall of said container, a scored section on said side Wall, and a free lip for permitting ready removal of a predetermined portion of said side Wall to break the vacuum seal and to provide for a safety seal.
8. As an article of manufacture, a cylindrical container capable of being sealed under vacuo, and having a cylindrical side Wall with a soldered seam, a scored section outlining a predetermined opening adjacent' said seam, a lip integral with said scored section and extending beyond said seam to provide means for removing said lip -and scored section, and a movable collar within said receptacle, said collar having anopening co-extensive with said outer opening to form an adjustable closure.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand on this 30 day of June, A. D.
,NIELS P. BACH.
