Fig.2 Q
Y Mm B fl zsm United States Patent 3,001,674 CONTAINER AND COVER THEREFOR WITH REMOVABLE BAND Barbara C. Wooten, College Station, Tex. (Rte. 4, Box 24, Byran, Tex.) Filed Oct. 4, 1957, Ser. No. 688,206 1 Claim. (Cl. 222-541) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cans or containers of the tear-strip type particularly for liquids and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a container of this character from which the content may be conveniently poured or decanted without the necessity for removing the top or cover.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a container of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, sanitary, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view, showing a container embodying the present invention being opened;
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section through an upper portion of the closed container; and
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view substantially similar to FIGURE 2 but showing the container after it has been opened.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a cylindrical body 4 of suitable metal, which body may be of any desired capacity. Of course, the body 4 includes a bottom 5. The body 4 further includes an inwardly offset or reduced upper portion 6 providing a shoulder 7 and having formed therein a plurality of circumferentially spaced discharge openings 8.
Mounted on the body 4 is a top or cover 9 of the depressed type. The top or cover 9 includes a depending annular flange 10 which telescopically receives the reduced upper end portion 6 of the body 4. The flange 10 has formed therein a plurality of circumferentially spaced discharge openings '11 which are in registry with the openings 8. A conventional bead 12 joins the flange 10 to the top 9.
Encircling the flange 10 between the bead 12 and the shoulder 7 is a band 13 of suitable metal. The band 13 is afiixed in any suitable manner to the flange 10 and the shoulder 7 of the body 4. The band 13 is circumferentially scored, as at 14, to provide a tear or rip strip 15 which closes the registering openings 10 and 11.
It is thought that the use of the container will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing.
Briefly, as shown to advantage in FIGURE 2 of the drawing and as hereinbefore stated, the tear strip 15 of the band 13 closes and seals the openings 8 and 11. To expose any desired number or all of the registering openings 8 and 11, the tear strip 15 is removed in an obvious manner through the medium of a conventional winding key 16. If the tear strip 15 is completely removed the top 9 with the flange 16 may be lifted from the body 4 E desired and replaced, said top and flange now functioning as a cover designated generally by reference character 17. Of course, the content of the container may be conveniently poured through the exposed registering openings 8 and 11. When so poured, the content does not contact the outside of the container and remains uncontaminated, a highly important and desirable feature of the invention.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A container comprising a cylindrical body including a reduced upper portion providing a horizontal shoulder, said reduced upper portion having a plurality of circumferentially spaced dispensing openings therein, a cylindrical cover removably mounted on the body, said cover including a top and an annular peripheral flange depending therefrom, said flange telescopically receiving said reduced upper portion of said body and having its lower end resting on the shoulder, said flange having a plurality of circumferentially spaced dispensing openings therein registering with the first named openings, and a band encircling the flange and having its upper portion aifixed thereto for closing the registering openings, said band having its lower end abutting the shoulder and detachably aflixed thereto, said band being circumferentially scored at a point above a horizontal plane immediately above the upper edge of the openings whereby the lower portion of said band may be wholly or partially torn off for exposing any desired number of the openings.
