Description

Jan. 5 1926.
0. J. CRAIG I ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed June 4, 1925 Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES ORVEL JAY CRAIG, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
APmication filed June 4, 1925. Serial No. 34,851.
To all whom it may co'ncem Be it known that I, Ouvnn JAY CRAIG, a citizen of United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare the following tofbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has for its object to provide a novel advertising device intended for general use, but especially adapted to be attached to merchandise offered for sale such as wearing apparel or the garment of a person.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
, Fig. 1 is a face view of the advertising device folded;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a. view corresponding to Fig.1
but showing the advertising device unfolded; and
Fig. e is a view corresponding to Fig.2 but showing the advertising device unfolded.
The advertising device comprises a tag 5 and a strip 6 connected at one of their ends and formed from paper or other suitable material. Said tag 5 and strip 6, as shown, are formed from a single piece of material, but of course they may be formed from separate pieces and the lower end portion of said strip pasted or otherwise attached to the lower end portion of said tag at the back thereof.
As one means forattaching the tag 5 to a garment by means of a button thereon, there is fori'ned in said tag near the top thereof a T-sha-ped button passage 7 which has been made the subject matter of a copending application Serial No. 34,850 entitled Fastening device, executed of even date herewith. For attaching the tag 5 to hosiery or other garments without buttons, the same may be provided with a flap (not shown) which may be stitched, pinned or otherwise attached thereto.
The strip 6 is provided with transverse folding lines 8 which divide said strip into lower ar at a hed P0 the g 5, 1
upper card 10 which is at the free end of the strip 6 and, as shown, three intermediate cards 12. Said strip 6 is narrower than the tag 5 and is inserted through a transverse slit 13 formed insaid tag near the bottom thereof. This slit 13 is so located that the lower portion of the card 9 is at the back of the tag 5 and the upper portion of said card at the front thereof.
It is important to note that the end cards 9 and 10 are made longer than the intermediate cards 12 for a purpose that will appear. Normally the strip 6 is folded on the lines 8 in such a manner that the upper card 10 is outermost, and said folded strip is inserted partway through the slit 13 be tween the lower end card 9 and back of the tag 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It may be here stated, that by making the lower end card 9 longer than the intermediate cards 12, the folded strip 6 may be inserted partway through the slit 13 be tween said lower card and the back of the tag 5..
The attached lower card 9 acts as a stop to limit the movement of the folded strip 6 through the slit 13, By making the card 10, at the free end of the strip 6, longer than the intermediate cards 12, the same, where said strip is folded, projects above all of the other cards to afford a convenient finger hold by which said strip may be grasped to withdraw the same from the slit 13 and unfold the same as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, there is illustrated partly on the tag 5 and partly on the end card 10 the upper portion of a young man A wearing an overcoat and hat, and
which illustration is complete when the strip 6 is folded and inserted part way through the slit 13 as shown in Fig. 1. It 6 may be presumed that it is the overcoat shown in the illustration that the manufacturer or merchant wishes to advertise.
The card 10 is trimmed or cut to the outline figure B is illustrated a plurality of parallel lines which may be presumed to be advertising or descr ptive matter relating to t e r icles w re by e fig r 0f were:
other advertising or descriptive matter may be indicated on any other part of the tag 5 or strip 6, as well as the name of the manufacturer or merchant and his address.
Normally the figures B are covered when the strip 6 is folded but are instantly brought to View when said strip is withdrawn from the slit 18 and unfolded as shown in Fig. 3. It is, of course, understood that the tag 5 and strip 6 may take various different shapes and forms and various different illustrations, advertisements, descriptive matter and the like may be indicated thereon.
The advertising device, in addition to being attached to garment and other merchandise, is well adapted to be distributed at conventions, fairs and other gatherings to be attached to the coats or other garments of the attendants by means of a button thereon.
YVhat I claim is:
1. An advertising device comprising a tag having a transverse slit. and a strip having one of the ends attached to the tag, said strip being normally folded and inserted part way through said slit and held with its loose end projecting outward of said slit.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 in which there is an illustration partly on the tag and partly on the strip and which illustration is complete when the strip is folded as stated.
3. An advertising device comprising a tag having a transverse slit, and a strip having one of its ends attached to the tag and provided with transverse longitudinally spaced folding lines, said strip being normally folded and inserted part way through said slit and held with its loose end projecting outward of the slit.
4. An advertising device comprising a tag having a transverse slit, and a strip having one of its ends attached to the tag and provided with transverse folding lines dividing said strip into longitudinally spaced end and intermediate cards, said strip being normally folded and inserted part way through said slit, the card at the loose end of the strip being longer than the intermediate card.
5. An advertising device comprising a tag having a transverse slit, and a strip having one of its ends inserted through said slit and attached to the tag, said strip having trans verse longitudinally spaced folding lines dividing said strip into end and intermediate cards, said strip being normally folded and inserted part way through said slit and held with the card at its loose end projecting outward of said slit.
6. The structure defined in claim 5 in which the card at the attached end of the strip is longer than the intermediate card and limits the movement of the folded strip through the slit.
7. The structure defined in claim 5 in which the card at the attached end of the strip is longer than the intermediate card and limits the movement of the folded strip through the slit, said folded strip when inserted through the slit being between the card and the back of the tag.
8. The structure defined in claim 5 in which the cards at the ends of the strips are longer than the intermediate card and in which the card at the attached end of the strip limits the movement of the folded strip through the slit, said folded strip when inserted through the slit being between the attached card and the back of the tag, the card at the free end of the strip when said strip is folded being outermost.
9. An advertising device comprising a tag having a transverse slit, and a strip, said tag and strip being formed from a single piece of material, said strip being narrower than the tag, folded onto the back thereof and inserted through said slit, said strip having transverse folding lines dividing said strip into longitudinally spaced end and intermediate cards, said strip being normally folded and inserted part way through said slit, said end cards being longer than the intermediate card and the card at the attached end of the strip limiting the movement of the folded strip into the slit, said strip when folded and inserted through said slit being between the card at the attached end of the strip and the back of the tag and the card at the free end of the folded strip being outermost.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ORVEL JAY CRAIG.
