DENTAL DEVICE.
Application filed September as, 192 1.
cation.
This invention relates to dental devices and has for its object the provision of a pair of adjustable jaws for determining the space between the gums when it is desired to provide false teeth.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device having a pair of adjustable jaws which are provided with an operating means adapted to be manipulated at a distance from the mouth of the person to which the device has been applied for predetermining the space for the adaptation of' false teetl This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the adjustable measuring device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a metal plate having its inner end provided with a flange 2 curved upwardly and conforming to the shape of the gums of the mouth of a human being. A second plate 3 has upturned portion 1 pivotally connected as shown at 5 to the plate 1 at its outer end. The inner end of the plate 3 terminates short of the plate 1 and is formed similarly to the inner end of the plate 1. The inner end of the plate 3 is rounded and provided with a clownturned flange 6 which conforms to the curvature of the lower gum of the mouth of a person.
A threaded rod 7 having an operating knurled knob 8 has its inner end rotatably SeriaI No. 739,383.
mounted in a perforation formed at the upper end of a lug 9. This lug is formed by cutting the metal of the rip-turned portion 4 of the plate 3 and bending the same in at an angle whereby the worm 7 may be carried horizontally by the lug 9 and a nut 10.
The. nut 10 is adapted to receive the threads 11 of the worm 7 and said nut is provided with oppositely projecting pins 12 having pivotal connections with a link 13 carried by the plate 3 and a link 141 carried by the plate 1 As shown more particularly in Figures 1 and 3 plates 1 and 3 are cut away as shown at 15 and a pin 16 is mounted transversely of the opening. The opposite ends of the links 13 and 14 has an eye 17 adapted to receive the pin 16. The inner ends of the links 13 and 1 1 are bifurcated and straddle the threaded rods 7 and have eyes at the free ends of the bifurcated portion received by the pins 12 with the nut 10. When it is desired to determine the spacing of the gums it is only necessary to place the device within the mouth of a person with the gums resting upon the inner free end of plate 1 adjacent the flange 2 while the lower gums are adapted to engage the plate 3 adjacent the curved flange 6. The knurled knob 8 is rotated in a direction to either move the plates 1 and 3 towards each other or further away as the case may be. As the rod 7 is rotated the nut moves either inwardly towards the lug 9 or outwardly away from said lug thereby placing the links 13 and 1a in an angular position as shown in Figure 2 to reduce the distance between said plates or to cause the links to be moved in a vertical line as shown in Figure 1 and extend the inner free ends of the plates the greatest distance apart.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected together, a lug projecting inwardly from one plate, a screw having one end mounted for rotation in the lug, a nut carried by the screw, and links pivotally connecting the nut with the inner free end of the plate.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected together, a lug projecting inwardly from one plate, a screw having one end mounted for rotation in the lug, a nut carried by the screw, links pivotally connecting the nut with the inner free end of the plate, the inner free ends of the plates being curved to contorrn to the curvature of the gum oi the mouth of a person.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of plates hingedly connected together, a lug projecting inwardly from one plate, a screw having one end mounted for rotation in the lug, a nut carried by the screw, links pivotally connecting the nut with the inner free end of the plate, the inner free ends of the plates being curved to conform to the curvature of the gum of the mouth of a person, and flanges curved outwardly from the plates and conforming to the curvature of the outer surfaces of the gums.
A device of the class described comprising a pair of plates, one of said plates having an inturned portion pivotally connected to the other plate, a lug projecting inwardly trom the last mentioned plate provided with a perforation, a screw having its inner end rotatably mounted in the perforation in the lug, said screw extending outwardly from and in between the pivoted plates, a nut having a threaded engagement with the screw and provided with pins projecting in opposite directions, and links pivotally connected with the plates and with the pins on the nut.
