This invention relates to certain improvements in wire cutters and is primarily an improvement on the device as disclosed in my pending application Serial No. 690,249, filed February 2, 1924.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily and conveniently placed in working position and particularly at locations where it would be diflicult and dangerous for the operator to climb.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby a lifting pole may be detachably engaged therewith to effect an initial setting of the device in working position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wire cutter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustratiing cutters constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position, a lifting; pole being shown associated with one of the cutters;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings. the cutter comprises two jaws one pivotally connected, as at 2, for relative swinging movement. tion of an elongated lever or bar 5. This bar or lever 5 is freely disposed between the plates 6 pivotally connected, as at 7 with the outer end portion of the second arm or lever 3. The plates 6 at their outer end portions are connected by a cross bolt 8 which is adapted to engage the outer longitudinal edge of the lever or bar 5. Secured to the outer or free extremity of the lever or bar 5 is a flexible member 9 herein disclosed as a chain.
The cutter as hereinbefore described is substantially the same as that disclosed in my pending application Serial No. 690,249, filed February 2. 1924 and is particularly adapted for use in connection with the cutting of the wires an employed for holding the stakes S of a logging car and secured in up right position and particularly when it is desired to unload.
Under some conditions it is inconvenient and dangerous for an operator to climb a loaded car to properly attach or position a cutter in working position with respect to a wire a and to overcome this disadvantage I provide means whereby a lifting element L may be employed in connection with the cutter. As herein disclosed. the lifting element comprises a pole of desired length and which is provided at one end with a socket 10 which is adapted to freely receive an elongated finger 11. This finger 11 is offset with respect to an arm 12 and angularly related thereto, said arm 12 being; adapted to beheld to one of the levers 3 by the pin or rivet 7 The outer end portion of the arm 12 is secured to said lever 3 by the rivet 14 or the like. said. end portion of the arm 12 being slightly offset to efiect the desired adjustment.
With the finger 11 engaged within the socket 10 of the lifting element or pole L a cutter may be readily raised for proper engagement with a wire a, and after so positioned the element or pole L may be readily disengaged from the finger so as to be out of the way. By use of the element or pole L the operator does not have to get upon the car or the load and is at all times out of danger.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a wire cutter constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carry ing out my invention in practice except as herein after claimed.
