Description

I Jan. 26,1926.
I F. I. ROUSH BENDING TOOL Filed April 17, 1925 Patented Jan. 26, 1926.
UNITED STATES FRANK I. ROUSH, OF NORTHUMBERLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
BENDING- TOOL.
Application filed April 17, 1925. Serial No. 23,883.
to provide a tool which will assist in inserting the trough or gutter into the Berger circles so as to be concentric therewith and fit properly therein.
It is well known that'at the present time because of crating and shipping the'troughs and gutters when about to be used are dis torted in various ways, and it is very difficult to fit these distorted troughs or gutters to the Berger circles. An important object of the invention is to provide a tool which will not only assist in forcing the trough or gutter into the Berger circles but also in properly reshaping the same, so that the trough or gutter will be concentric with the curvature of the Berger circle.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a tool which will hold the trough in place in the Berger circles while the straps are being bent in engagement with the bead of the trough or gutter.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a tool of this nature which is exceedingly simple in construction, convenient, eflicient, and reliable in operation, strong, durable, not liable to readily get out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other ob jects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Fi ure 1 is an elevation of the tool embodymg the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is another elevation thereof taken at dright angles to that shown in Figure 1, an
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the manner in which the tool is used.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 1 designates a pivot bolt, a lever 2 is pivoted intermediate its ends to this bolt 1, and levers 3 and 4 are also pivoted to this bolt 1, one on each side of the lever 2. The levers are held assembled on the pivot bolts by means of a nut 4 or in'any other suitable manner. The handle portions 5 of the levers 3 and 4 are riveted as at 6, and have a spacing washer 7 disposed therebetween in order that the handle 8 of the lever 2 may move partially there-' between. The iaw portions of the levers 3' and 4 are bent outwardly from each other as at 10 and terminate in parallelspaced terminals 11 notched as at 12.
The aw portion of the lever 2 is twisted, its terminal is curved longitudinally as at 13. The outer longitudinal edge of the handle 8 is provided with an angularly extending flange portion 14 so that the same may be gripped tightly without any danger of cutting the fingers.
The advantages and utility of the tool may be clearly understood by tinners and others skilled in that art by referring particularly to Figure 3 wherein I have illustrated the usual Berger circle bracket 15, having the hook terminal 16. A gutter 17 is forced into the Berger circle 15 by engaging the bead 18 thereof with the jaws of the le vers 3 and 4, the bead resting in the notches 12. The hook 16 is engaged by the curved terminal of the twisted jaw of the lever 2. Therefore, by swinging the handles 5 and 5 toward each other it will be seen that the bead is forced downwardly. so as to cause the trough and gutter to fit snugly onthe upper curved portion of the Berger circle. When fully forced into this circle, the strap 19 may be easily bent over the bead 18 in the usual manner.
The present embodiment of the invention which I have described in detail has been given merely by way of example, and it is apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or I sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a tool of the class described, a pivot 10 bolt, a lever pivoted on the bolt, a pair of levers pivoted on the bolt, one'on each side of the first lever, the terminals of the pair of levers being notched, the adjacent end of the first mentioned lever being twisted, at right angles and having a curved terininal the notched ends of the pair of levers being bent outwardly from each other,
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
