UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wnENcn.
Application filed November 21, 1927.
The present invention relates generally to wrenches and more particularly to a wire rope twister. In well drilling operations it is necessary to twist the wire rope and this is usually done with an ordinary pipe wrench which from time to time accidentally slips out of the workmans hand and flies around and injuries him and sometimes flies eff the rope and becomes lost in the well.
The principal object of the present'invention is to provide a wrench which overcomes these annoyances.
A still further important object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the wrench embodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view therethrough taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail elevation of the cam lever,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a plan view of another embodiment of the wrench, and
Figure 6 is an elevation of the sucker rod upon which the modified form of the wrench may be used to advantage. 7
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a U- shaped body havin transverse passages 6 in the legs thereof adjacent the bight thereof for slidably receiving the jaw 7 or a jaw 7 the former being shown in Figure 1 and the latter being shown in Figure 5. Spokes 8 extend diagonally from the body 5 and a split rim 9 is formed on the ends thereof. The space caused by the split in the rim being coincident with the space between. the

trance for a wire rope in the embodiment shown in Figure 1 and for a sucker rod 10 for the embodiment shown in Figure 5. The jaw 7 and the jaw'7 each is formed with an extension 11 having an elongated longitudinal slot 12 therein. The numeral 13 denotes a lever having a cam end 14 with openings to receive a pin 15. The cam end 14 is bifurcated to straddle the extension 11 and the pin 15 extends through the slot 14. A set screw 16 is threaded through the end of the shank 11 into the slot 12 to bear against the pin 15 for adjusting the jaw 7 and the jaw 7. The jaw 7 is provided with serrations 17 and the body with serrations18 in the embodiment shown in Figure 1 so that when the lever is in the position shown in Figure l the serrations will bite into the wire rope so thatthe same may be readily twisted. It will be seen that if the rim 9 twists out of the operators hand no injury will be occasioned and the wrench will not become lost. A bolt 20 projects from the jaw '7 and the jaw 7 opposite to the shank 11 and impinges against the body 5 and against a nut 21 on the bolt 20, said spring being denoted by numeral 1 22. This spring will move the jaw when the lever 13 is swung to a position from that shown in Figure 1 as will be quite apparent for releasing the cable. The jaw 7 ismade to engage a sucker rod of the square end 10' thereof. If desired the jaw 7 may be removed with the cooperating parts and the sucker rod placed in the body 5; in order to prevent it from accidentally coming out a spring pressed ball 25 is provided in one leg of the body 5, the spring being denoted 'by the numeral 26 and a tensioning screw being denoted by the numeral 27.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility, and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent'that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and. arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
flaving thus described our invention, what we claimed as new is:
l. in a wrench of the class described, a U-shaped body with spokes projecting therefrom, a split rim formed on the end of the spokes extending from the terminal of one leg of the body to the terminal of the other leg thereof about the bite portion thereof, said body being provided with a transverse passage, movable jaw in the transverse passage and a cam lever pivotally engaged on the aw and operable against the body. 2. In a wrench of the class described, a
meme? U-shaped body with spokes projecting therefrom, a split rim formed on the end of the spokes extending from the terminal of one leg of the body to the terminal of the other leg therefor about the bite portion thereof, said body being provided with a transverse passage, a movable jaw in the transverse passage and a cam lever pivotally' engaged on the jaw and operable against the body, spring means associated with the movable jaw for normally holding the same open.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
