UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO H. CALDWELL, 0F HOUSTON, TEXAS.
- CUTTER.
Application filed October 3, 1927. Serial no. 223,613.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cutter.
One object of the invention is to provide a cutter of the character described specially designed for cutting overhead wires, but it I is capable of general application for cutting purposes. r
Another object of the invention s to provide a cutter designed to sever wires which are charged with electricity, and which is of 5 wherein Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the implement, and
Figure 2 shows a side view thereof. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures the numerals 1, 2 designate the respective blades which have the confronting cutting edges 3, 4, at one end, and which are connected by the intermediate side links, 5, 5 between the corresponding ends of which the blades are pivoted. The other ends of the blades are extended forming the shanks 6, 7 and pivoted to the freeend of the shank 6 there is a bracket 8 one end of which embraces the outer edge of the shank 6 and whose other end has a universal connection with the adjacent end of the exteriorly threaded screw shaft 9.
There is a jaw 10, one end of which is bifurcated forming a slot 11 provided to receive the shank 7 and having a cross pin 12, serving as a stop to limit the relative movement of the shank 7 and the jaw 10, in one direction. Extending outwardly from the jaw 10 are the spaced arms 13, 13 between which the outer end of the shank 7 is pivoted, and between the free ends of the arms 13, an interiorly threaded sleeve 14 is pivotally mounted and the shaft 9 is threaded through this sleeve.
A grip handle 15 is pivoted to the jaw 10, to swing 1n ,atransverse plane, said jaw and handle being connected by means of a clamp bolt, 16 one end of which has a wing nut 17 threaded thereon which may be readily loosenedto permit the adjustment of the handle 15 relative to the jaw 10 and then again tightened to prevent the relative movement of these connected part-s.
There isa joined link 18 whose ends are plvoted to the other end of the shaft 9 and V to the adjacent end of the operating handle 19, respectively, the axis of the pivot connectlngthe sections of said link 18 beingat substantlally right angles to the axes 'ofthe .pivots connecting the link 18 to the shaft Qand handle 19 respectively, to the end that said handle 19 will have great freedom of movementrelative to said shaft.
The handles 15 and 19 have the grips 20,
21 respectively formed ofinsulating material.
The cutter may be supported relative to the work by the handle'15 and: whenthe edges 3, 4 are applied to the work the handle 19 may besuitably turned to force the shanks 6, 7. apart, thus forc ng the edges 3, 1 toward each other and severing the wire, or other object; between them. The cutter blades may be opened by then manipulating the handle 19 in the other direction.
WVhile I have shown what I now consider the preferred form of the implement it is apparent that mechanical changes may be made therein and equivalents substituted for the parts shown without departing from the principle of the invention and I reserve the right to make such mechanical changes as may be found desirable, and as may be comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is z- 1. An implement of the character described including confronting blades con nected together and having pivoted movement relative to each other, said blades having confronting cutting edges, at'one end and whose other ends are extended, forming shanks, a jaw having an extended arm to which one of said shanks is pivoted, an interiorly threaded sleeve pivoted to said arm, a shaft threaded through said sleeve and connected to the other shank, and handles, one connected to saidshaft, and the other connected to said jaw.
2. An implement of the character def scribed including a pair of blades connected together and having pivotal movement relative to each other, said blades having confronting cutting edges at one end and whose other ends are extended, forming shanks, a jaw having an extended arm to which one of said shanks is pivoted, an interiorly threaded sleeve pivoted to said arm, a. shaft threaded through said sleeve, a bracket pivoted to the other shank with which one end of the shaft has a pivotal connection means limiting the'movement of said bracket, relative to its arm, in one direction, handles pivoted to said jaw and to the other end of said shaft, respectively,
3. An implement of the character described including blades formed with confronting cutting edges, at one end, and having their other end formed into extended shanks, an intermediate cross link whose ends are pivoted to the respective blades, a bracket pivoted to one shank and having a limited movement relative thereto, a shaft connected, at one end, to said bracket, a jaw having an extended arm to which the other shank is connected, a sleeve threaded onto said shaft and connected to said arm, and handles, one connected to said jaw and the other connected to the other end of said shaft.
LAn implement of the character 'described including blades connected together and having pivotal movement relative to each other, said blades having confronting cutting edges at one end, shanks at the other ends of the blades, a shaft connected to one of said shanks, a jaw having an extended arm to which the other shank is connected,
means carried by said arm and having a threaded connection with said shaft, means for manipulating said shaft and a handle connected to said jaw.
5. An implement of the character described including blades connected together.
threaded connection with said shaft, means for manipulating said shaft and a handle connected to said aw, said shaft manipulat- ,ing means and said handle being pivotally connected to said shaft and jaw respectively.
6. An implement of the character de scribed including blades connected together and having relative movement, said blades having confronting cutting edges at one end, shanks carried by the other ends of the blades, a manipulating shaft one end of which is connected to one of said shanks, a jaw having a slot which receives the other shank, said jaw having spaced, extended arms between which said other shank is pivoted, means carried by said arms'having a threaded connection with said shaft, a bandle having an adjustable connection with said shaft and means pivotally connected to the other end of said shaft for turning the shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
