Description

R. COOPERSMITH Nov. 3, 1925.
GARMENT Filed May 5, 1924 `to form a belt or waistband.
Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
NITED STATES GFFICE RUDOLPH COOPERSMITE, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
GARMENT.' A
Application filed Hay 3,
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that L Rimonrn Coornn.- SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvementl in Garments, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to garments and more particularly to. body-garments of .the kind known as shirts and shirt-waists for mens and womens wear, respectively.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction in suc-h garments that will overcome the tendency ot' the garment to creep upward on the wearer and become displaced or wrinkled. Another object is to adapt the retaining means for adjustment to the waist of the wearer. Other objects are neatness of appearance and simplicity and cheapness of construction.
The invention consists in the means hereinafter set forth for attaining the above objects; and it also consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter d escribed and claimed.
The accompanying drawing, which formg part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur. is a frontview of a shirt embodying my invention, portions of the shirt being folded back to disclose the retaining device.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invent-ion is shown in connection with a body-garment in the form of an ordinary coat-shirt 1 for mens wear.
The retaining device comprises intermediate and end pieces .of cloth or other suitable. material which are sewed or otherwise fastened to the inside of the shirt at the waist-line thereof, and serve to reinforce said shirt along said line. The intermediate strip 2 is secured to the back of the shirt; and the end strips 3 are secured to the front portions thereof with their outer end portions left loose. The end and intermediate strips are disposed end to end along the waist-line of the shirt with their adjacent ends spaced apart; and said adjacent ends of said intermediate and end strips are connected together by means of strips of elastic et which cooperate with the non-elastic strips The loose or free outer end portion of one of the end strips is provided with a series of buttons 5; and the loose or free outer end portion of 1924. Serial No. 710,713.
the other end strip is provided with buttonholes 6 adapted to receive said buttons 5, whereby the loose or free outer ends of the end strips are adapted to be lapped and joined together when the shirt is buttoned up.
The adjacent end portions of the intermediate and end strips are provided with a series of `bnttonholes 7 adapted to receive buttons 8 that are secured to the ends of the elastic strips 4, whereby said elastic strips may be replaced when they lose their clasticity or removed before the shirt is laundered. The middle portions of the elastic strips 4; are loosely'held in position by means of cloth straps 9 that are sewed or otherwise fastened to lnside of the shirt midway between the adjacent ends of the intermediate and end strips and serve as guides for said elastic strips. l
ln use, thc free outer ends of the end strips of the retaining device are lapped and buttoned together. The shirt is then buttoned up, therebyentirely concealing the retaining device. In the buttoned position of the retaining belt, the elastic sections thereof operate to maintain a yielding tension of the belt around the waist ofthe wearer. where by the waist portion'of the shirt is drawn snugly about the waist of the wearer, This snug tit of the shirt about the waist of the wearer serves to hold the shirt in proper position at the waist line, thereby preventing creeping or sliding movement of the body portion of the shirt, which movement tends to cause portions of the shirt to become wrinkled or displaced.
Some of the important advantages of my retaining device are, namely: It permits the elastic strips to be raised or lowered for long or short-waisted persons; it provides for variation in the waist size; it enables the elastic `strip to be readily replaced when worn and removed before launderiiw'- it 7: strengthens or reinforces the waist portion of the shirt; and it is entirely concealed and y is of simple and cheap construction.
Obviously, the device admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construct-ion shown and described.
VVha-t I claim is:
1. The combination of a garment of the kind described and a retaining device therefor, said device comprising a strip located entirely within and removably secured to said garment along its waist portion, said garment and said strip bein(1r provided with co-operating fastening devices adapted to permit vertical ad'ustment of said strip with relation to sai garment, said fastening devices being adapted to prevent horiontal movement of said strip with relation to said garment.
2. The combination of a garment of the kind described and a retaining device therefor, said device comprising elastic strips located entirely withinV and removably securedv end to end to the inside of said garment along the waist portion thereof, said garment and said strips being provided with co-operating fastening devices adapted to permit vertical adjustment of said strips with relation to said garment, said fastenj ing devices being adapted to prevent horizontal movement of said strips with relation to said garment.
3. The `combination of a garment of the kind described and a retaining device therean end sections permanently secured to the whereby said ends are adapted to inside of said garment along its waist portion, the outer ends of said end sections being left loose and formed with cooperating fastening devices, whereby said ends are adapted to be joined together, and elastic vsections connectmg the adjacent ends of said end and intermediate sections.
