JACOB SKEEN, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON STANDARDS AND BOLSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,987, dated October 13, 1374 application filed February 7, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SKEEN, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Bolsters and their attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
vThe object I have in View is such an improvement in the construction of holsters and their stakes and locking-keys, for use in wagons, as will add to their convenience in use, and to their durability and cheapness; and my invention therein consists in the novel construction of the holsters, the stakes, and their locking-keys.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to construct my bolster and attachments, I proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of one of the holsters, with the stakes in position; Fig. 2, a top view of one of the holsters Without the stakes; Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, separate views of the stakes 5 Figs. 7 and 8, separate views of the keys.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in each ligure.
A represents the bolster, of any convenient size or form, having at its ends, upon its upper surface, plates B, properly secured thereto. In these plates is a rectangular opening, a, for the reception of the foot of the stake, which opening extends down through the bolster. Between this opening and the ends of the. bolster are circular openings b for the reception of a holding-stud upon the stakes. Upon the bottom of the bolster, is another plate, O, having openings c to correspond with the openings a just named, and upon the sides of the bolsters are other plates, D, placed opposite to each other, and having key-holes d of the general form of a key-hole for a common lock, or circular key-holes d', to suit the different sorts of keys hereinafter described. These plates are all preferablyY sunk into the bolster to a level with its surface. Upon these holsters the stakes E E1 E2 E3 are intended to be placed, their feet iitting in the openings a, and passing down through the holsters, and the upper and lower plates before named. In each of -these stakes there is a recess, c, upon each side of their tops, leaving the metal very thin between them; and in the offsetting-stakes E E1 there are other recesses, el, upon each side of the shoulders f, or offsetting parts; and there may, if desired, also be other recesses, e2, upon each side of the feet. There are also upon each of the stakes, upon each side, wings e3, arranged centrally with their bases upon the same plane as their seats, which rest upon the tops of the holsters. Of these stakes, that designated by the letter E has a straight body, f1, the lower part of which rests upon the bolsters, and is there furnished with a stud, f2, intended to iit into the opening bin the top plate of the bolster. The foot f3 of this stake is offset, as shown in Fig. 5, and has a central o enin 4 whichvis circular and rovided with screw-threads for one kind of key, and has an ordinary carpetbag key-hole form, f5, for the other kind of key. The stake E1 differs from that described in having its body curved outwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. The stake E2 differs from those already described in being straight from top to bottom, having no offset or shoulder; and the stake E3 differs from this last in having its body curved outwardly, neither of these stakes having the stud f2. The keys F F are of two sorts, each having on one side a handle, g, bending downward to serve as a weight to hold it in position, a shoulder, g1, to limit its penetration through the holster, and a body, g2. In the key F this body, about midway, is diminished in size throughout the outer part, and that portion next to the part so diminished in size is provided with screw-threads. In the key F the body is of the same size throughout, and at the eXtreme end has a small fin, g3, upon the same side with the handle, which gives it the lin the plates and stakes, and so as to lock its fm over its propenplateginwhich position it is held by the Weight vvofitsy down-hanging 1. The bolster A, the plates B, C, and D,
` having openings a, c, and d d', all constructed and combined substantially. as described and shown. f I
2. The stakes E El E2 E3, having recesses` upon their sides and'side Wings, substantially as described and shown.
3. The keys F Ff, in Combination with nl@ stakes, substantially as described and shown. 4. The bolster A, having the plates B, C, and D, in oombination'with the stakes E E1 E2 E, all substantially as described and shown. This specieation signed and witnessed this 3d day of February, 187 4.
