. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed J'anuary 5, 1912. Serial No. 669,651.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER J. ASMITH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- Piedmont, in the county of Wayne, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stakes or Standards for WVagon-Bolsters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and novel improvements in stakes or standards for wagon bolsters, and has for its object to produce adevice of this character which is simple in construction, durable and eificient in operation.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a device of this character that the same may be easily and quickly removed from the bolster.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a wagon stake or standard which is adjustably mounted upon the bolster to permit the use of different width beds or boxes.
A still further object of the invention is to form the stake or standard partly from wood and partly from metal, thus reducing the cost of the same, but at the same time imparting thereto the desired strength.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front eleva tion of the device. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end view of the device.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the bolster having secured to its ends U-shaped plates 2, said plates being formed from stout sheet metal. Formed in the bight portion of each plate 2 are diametrically opposite kerfs 3 formed in the edges 4: of said plate.
Arranged longitudinally upon the ends of the bolster 1 are metallic strips 5, said strips being provided with a plurality of alined perforations 6 which register with sockets 7 formed in the bolster., The inner ends of the strips 5 are bolted to the bolster, while their outer ends terminate in downwardly extending flanges 8 which bear against the ends of the bolster, and are secured thereto by screw bolts 9 which pass through the bight portion of the U-shaped plates.
The stakes or standards 10 consist of body portions 11, the side edges of which are beveled slightly to provide a base 12. Bolted to the body portions 11 are metal side plates 13, the same conforming to the beveled configuration of the body portion, the lower ends of said plates extending perpendicularly below the base portions 12 and arranged in spaced relation, the extreme lower ends of the extended portions terminating in grooves 13. which are adapted to engage the lower edges of the U-shaped plates upon passing through the kerfs 3 therein. The body portions 11 are formed with inclined shoulders 14, the upper end of the vertical opening 15 formed in the body portion opening at the shoulder.
A locking pin 16 is provided, and is adapted to operate in the opening 15, said pin having formed near its lower end perforations 17, and in which the lower end of the coil spring 18 passes, the upper terminal 19 of said spring being secured by a screw 20 to the body portion. The upper end of the pin is formed with a loop 21, which may be grasped to withdraw the lower end of the pin from engagement with any one of the perforations 6 and sockets 7 whereby the stakes or standards 10 may be removed or adjusted in difl'erent positions on the bolster. The bolster 1 has formed upon its opposite sides grooves 22 to accommodate the extended lower edges of the side plates 13 which form the grooves 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
What is claimed is:
A bolster having U-shaped plates secured to its ends, said plates having kerfs formed in their bight portions, metal strips having their inner ends secured to the upper surfaces of the bolster, and their outer ends terminating in downwardly extending flangesadapted to bear against the ends of said bolster and between said ends and bight portions of said plates, perforations formed in the strips, standards having body portions, the side edges of which being beveled by the stakes or standards may be adjusted to produce a base, side plates secured to the upon the bolster,
body portions and having their lower edges In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaextending below said base and terminating ture, in presence of two witnesses.
in groovesfor engaging the kerfs and lower OLIVER J. A. SMITH. edges of the U-shaped plates, and a spring Witnesses: operated pin carried by the base portions to A. T. BAnRoW, engage the perforations in the strips, where- A. G. TEMPLETON.
