T. G. MANDT.
WAGON STANDARD.
No. 391,256. Patented Oct. 16, 1888.
Y W'ITNESSES, @i @a W l UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
TARGE G. MANDT, OF STOUGHTON, VISGONSIN.
WAGON-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,256, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed March 1G, 1888.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tagen-Standards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaeeompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wagonvst-andard as it appears upon the end of the bolster. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the standard removed from the bolster. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the standard and one of its rings or eyes, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the said rings or eyes detached from the standard.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to wagon-stand ards (sometimes called bolster-stakes made of metal; and it consists in the improved coustruction and combination of parts of a Wagonstandard of that class, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A. designates one end of a wagon-bolster provided with my improved standard or stake. The latter consists of a bar of iron or steel rolled so as to form a flat part or face, B, which faces the wagonbex, and a longitudinal rib, C. Thelower part ofthe standard is provided with the usual tenon, D, the lower part of which is rounded and screw-threaded to receive a nut, E, whereby the standard is held in place after the part D has been inserted through the usual aperture in the bolster. rIhe upper end or top part of the fiat face C is curved outwardly, as shown at F, and upon the rib O are bolted, a suitable distance apart, two or more eyes, (denoted by the letters G G,) which are of the peculiar shape shown in the drawings-that is to say, each of these eyes (which are by preference made of malleable castiron) consists of a circular part, H, and a flat part, I, forming approximately a square corner, J. The part nearest this square corner is cnlargcd,as shown Serial No. 267,311.5.
at K, to adapt it to be bored through to forni a bolt-hole, L, without weakening the metal too much. The square part of the eye G fits into the square corner formed by the face and rib ofthe standard, and the eye is held in place by means of a bolt or rivet, M, inserted through the hole L and through a corresponding hole in the rib.
It will be seen that the eyes G may be attaehed to either side of rib G, according to whether the standard is to be used on the right or on the left side of the wagon, and it will further be seen that the enlarged or squared part or corner J, by bearing against the inner side of the face and one side of the rib, prevents the eye from turning after the same has been fastened by means of the bolt or rivet M.
In order to fix the standard firmly in its position upon the bolster, I employ a pair of nietallic braces, N N, the upper ends of which are fastened by a single bolt, O, to opposite sides of the rib C, while the diverging lower ends of said braces are fastened by bolts, screws, or other suitable means to opposite sides ofthe end of the bolster, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this makes a very light but strong standard, adapted to resist lateral pressure, and adapted to receive extension-stakes, which may be inserted through the eyes G G in such a manner that the lower parts of said extension-stakes will be firmly braced against the corner formed by the fiat faceplate and its rearwardly-eXtend` ing rib. By rounding the upper part of the fiat face-plateIl outwardly the wagon-box may readily be inserted upon the bolster without catching against the top of the standard, and the peculiar construction of the eyes G, as hereinbefore set forth and illustrated in the drawings, not only enables these eyes to be used on either side of the central rib, but also holds them firmly in place, so that they cannot turn or tilt out of their proper horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention,Ielaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesn Theeombination, with the wagon-standard or bolster-stake consisting, essentially, of a ilat face-plate and a rearwardly-extending rib,

of one or more eyes for holding the extension. In testimony that I claim the' foregoing as my stakes, said eyes having an enlarged angular own I have hereunto affixed my signature in vlo corner-piece adapted to t into the corner presence of two Witnesses.
formed by the face-plate and its rib and to be 5 held securely in position by means of a bolt or TARGE G' MANDT' rivet inserted through the enlarged square Witnesses: part of the eye and the rib of the stake, sub- 'IHORVALD C. LUND, stantially as shown and set forth. OSWALD F. KROPF.
