Description

J. H/ANDERSON.
WAGON TONGUE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 3. 191B.
Patented July 25, 1922.
a E m M JOHN H. ANDERSON, or s'r. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
WAGON TONGUE.
Application filed April 3,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. ANDnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, resident of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in /Vagon Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a wagon tongue which can be easily and quickly adjusted for use with wagons having a variable distance between the hounds.
A further object is to provide a tongue of strong, durable construction and one which can be easily mounted in or detached from the wagon.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon tongue and hounds with my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line .22 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, 2 represents a tongue or pole, tapered in the usual way and having a clevis 3 provided at its forward end. The tongue is channel-ironed the full length on both sides, as shown inthe' drawing. The other end oi the tongue is suitably mortised into a cross bar l which in turn has its ends mortised in tongue hounds 5 and 6 which are secured to each side of the tongue in the rear of its middle portion. A bolt 7 passes through the rear ends of the tongue hounds and secures them and the cross bar 4 together. 10 is a bolt passing through the wagon hounds 8 and 9 and through holes 11 in the tongue and forms a pivot on which the tongue is free to oscillate vertically.
To mount the tongue in the wagon hounds, I provide angle plates 12 and 13 having their depending flanges arranged to bear on the inner faces of the wagon hounds 8 and 9 and their horizontal flanges arranged to overlap the tongue hounds when the tongue is inserted between the angle plates. Bolts 14 are provided to it holes 15 arranged transversely of the horizontal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922. 1918. Serial No. 226,421.
flanges of the angle plates and these bolts may be moved to fit the different positions of the tongue hounds with respect to the supporting plates and the varying distances between the wagon hounds. I am thus able to use the tongue on various types of wagons. To assemble the parts, put the tongue bolt through the hounds and the tongue and the adjustable plates, taking care that the tongue is in the middle and at right angles with the axle, then move the adjustable plates up against the inner faces of the wagon hounds with their horizontal flanges seated on the upper surfaces of the tongue hounds and mark the place for the bolt holes. Then bore the holes through the tongue hounds and insert the bolts.
It will be noted that the tongue is held securely by the four bolts 14 fitting in the holes 15 and extending down through the tongue hounds. Upon removing these bolts,
work of fitting a new tongue to the wagon can be easily and quickly done on the farm, it being only necessary for the person doing the work to place the tongue in the proper position between the wagon hounds, mark the wooden hounds through the bolt holes, bore the holes in the tongue hounds and insert the securing bolts. The work can be easily and quickly done and with such tools as are usually found on any farm.
I claim as my invention:
The combination, with the wagon hounds, of angle plates having their vertical flanges seated against the inner faces of said hounds and their horizontal flanges projecting into the space between said hounds, a tongue adapted to lie between said wagon hounds and having tongue hounds on which said horizontal flanges are seated, said horizontal flanges each having a plurality of transverse rows of holes therein through which the proper places for the bolt holes in the tongue hounds may be marked bolts passing vertically through the holes in said horizontal flanges and through the holes made in said tongue hounds, and a horizontal bolt passing transversely through said Wagon and tongue hounds and the vertical flanges of said 10 plates.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 111 hand this 25th day of March 1918.
JOHN H. ANDERSON.
