PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR J. RANKN, Sl? ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOOL.
Application filed July 30, 1923, Serial No. 654,657. Renewed .Tune 1, 1925.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, @SGAR Jv. RANniN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Inii'n'ovenients in Tools, of which the following is a specilication. Y
rlhis invention relates to a tool by ineans which it is possible to reach and conveniently operate valves and the like whichrare located in places not easily accessible. For example, it may be used to turn the draincocks ot the radiator or gasoline supply oit an auton'iobile without. compelling the operator to assunie an awkward and uncomfortable position while doing so, as is necessary may be used to loosen an unusually tiglrtA filler-cap on a gasoline tank.
The tool proper consists oif a cylindrical rod 1, preferably ot steel or wrought iron, having its end portions 2 and 3 flattened to an oblong cross-section, the broad sides d and 5 ot the respective end portions 2 and 3, for th@ sake of simplicity in its inanuiiactur and for greater ease of manipulation, preferably lying in the saine plane. The end portion 2 is bent back upon itself on its narrow sides 6 to foi-in a loop 7, which serves as a convenient handle. rilhe end portion 3 is bent on its narrow sides 8 to iorin an arin 9 perpendicular tothe cylindrical part ot the rod 1. flic Lree end 10 or the arni 9 is then bent al haltl turn 11 en its broad side 5 to a U-shape orin having a slot 12, the bend being on an axis parallel to rod 1. l
In using the tool to operate the levers of pet-cocks orthe like, wnich are lo"ate.fl in places not easily accessible, as, for instance, the drain-cock 13 of a radiator 11i, the arin 9 is placed in juxtaposition to the lever 15 of the pet-cock 13, .with the lever 15 projecting into the slot 12 of the tool, so that the arni 9 and its .free end 10 straddle the levi1 15, as shown in Fig. 3. rI`he lever 15 can then be turned by the operators twisting the wrist or `the hand with whichhe holds the tool. the rotary inova'nnent being transmitted through the rod 1 tov the lever 15. c
rlhe tool handle niay be used 'to loosen an unusually tight filler-cap 16 on a gaso-` line tank 17, as shown in F ig. il, the handle 7 being inserted in the slot 18 of the iillercap 16, and a turning movement imparted to the rod 1, in screwdriver fashion, the hand being applied to the arni 9.
The tool can also be used as a gage for indicating the amount of gasoline in a tank by inserting the handle 7 into the filleropening of the tank and letting it touch the bottoin of the tank, and then withdrawing the tool Jr'roni thel tank and noting the height to which it has been wet-ted by the gasoline, a series ot marks 19 being inscribed on the sides ot the tool to indicate the quantity of gasoline still remaining in the tank.
Having thus describedk this invention, I hereby reserve the benefit ot all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many niinor changes may be inade therein without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A tool of the character described coniprising a rod having one of its ends flattened to rectangular forni, the flattened portion being bent into a loop to forni a handle, and having the other of its ends bent to forni a perpendicular arni, the free end of said arm being bent a half turn about an axis parallel to the inain portion of said rod, the
llattening providing' a slot with -Hat parallel sides. g l
2. A tool of the character described comprising a rod having end portions of oblong cross-section, and an intermediate cylindrical portion, one ot the 'said end portions being bent into a loop `to form a handle, and the other of said end portions being bent on its narrow sides to form an arm, the free end oty said arni being'bent on its wide sides to a U-shape.
In test-inionywhereof I hereunto affix my signature.
' OSCAR J. RANKIN.
