Description

Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JHUE RUSSELL EAEP, or orrATrANoocA, TENNESSEE, AssIGNoE E ONE-HALE To BENJAMIN SIEVEEMAN, or cHATTANooGA, TENNESSEE.
Application l'ed November 7, 1923. Serial No. 673,254.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JHUE RUSSELL EARP, citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Combs, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to hair dressing and has special reference to a device for straightening wavy or kinky hair.
More particularly the invention relates to an improved hair straightening comb- One important objectV of the invention is to provide a novel comb of this character having an improved general construction.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel comb for this purpose having a toothed portion provided with a back and teeth held together in an improved manner.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel angular arrangement of teeth in a comb `for this purpose.
-lVith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specitically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the comb showing the angular dispositions of the teeth.
Figure 3 is an end view thereof.
Figure 4- is a cross section through the comb portion of the device showing the employment of teeth curved in one direction.
Figure 5 is a view showing the opposite curvature of the teeth in one form,
In this form of the invention there is pro-- vided a back member of substantially oval cross section. Extending through this member from end to end is an opening or bore 11, this opening being at one end of the ellipse and thus near what may be termed one edge portion of the device. The remaining edge portion of the back is provided with a series of spaced slots 12 which are disposed diagonally across the back and intercept a portion of the bore 11 at their inner ends as seen in Figure 4. Through the tooth spacers 13 formed by these slots extends a series of alined openings for the reception of a tooth retaining rod 14which is provided on one end with a head 15. The rear end of the vrodV 14 `is received in a suitable pocket 14 formed in the rear portion of theback member.
Extending through `the opening 11 is a shank 16 having on one end a head 17 which overlaps the head when the parts are assembled and thus holding the rod 14 in place. This shank also passes through a handle 18 and is secured therein by a nut 19 or the like. y
In connection with the back there isy provided a series of teeth 20 which may either be straight as shown in Figure 3 or curved laterally as shown in Figure 4. Each' of these teeth is of proper thickness to lit snugly in one of the slots 12 and is provided with a base end squared off to enable it to lit against the bottom of the slot and against a portion of the shank 16 which is flattened `for that purpose. The teeth are held in position by the, rod 14, being' provided with elongated openings 21 for receiving said rod. Thus the teeth back and handle are secured to each other in a lightly efcient manner so that the assemb-led device becomes a practically unitary structure.
In use the -hair to be straightened is treated by heating the comb portion of the invention and repeatedly drawing it through the hair. It is to be noted that the diagonal disposition of the teeth is found to be very etlicient in removing `kinks and waves in many instances.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed `as new, is:
1. In a comb of the class described, aback member of substantially oval cross section said back member having an opening adjacent one edge portion and extending longitudinally therethrough, said hack member being further provided with a similar opening adjacent its other vedge portion and having slots in the last mentioned edge portion cutting through the last mentioned opening and into the first opening, teeth having back portions provided with openings adapted to register with the opening near the second edge portion and to be positioned in said slots, a pin passing through the last mentioned openings and having a head on one end bearing against the end of the back, a shank passing through the rst mentioned opening in the back and having a head overlapping the head on .the pin, said shank being flattened on one side to permit the base ends ot said teeth tol rest thereon, and a handle mounted on said shank.
2. In a comb ot' the Class described, a back i member of substantial-1y ova-1 cross section said baok member having an opening adjarcent lone edge portion and extending longitudinally therethrough, said back member :being further lprovided with a similar opening adjacent its other edgey portion and having slots diagonally disposed vin the last mentioned edge portion cutting through nthe last mentioned opening and into fthe first opening, teeth having base portions provided with openings adapted to register with the through the last mentioned openings and having a head on one end bearing against the end of the back, a shank passing through the first lmentioned opening in the back and having a head overlapping the head on the pin, said shank being flattened on one side tol permit the .base .ends of said teeth `to rest thereon, and a handle mounted on -said shank.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
