To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SILVER- MAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of I-Iamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specifcation.

This invention relates to hair dressing and has special reference to a device for straightening wavy or kinky hair,

.l/lore particularly the invention relates to an improved hair straightening comb.

One important object of the invention is to provide a novel comb of this character having an improved general construction.

second important object of the invention is to provide a. novel assembly of back and teeth in a comb of this class.

A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved means for holding the teeth in properly spaced relation and a handle on the toothed portion of a comb` of this class.

W ith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically claimed.

In carrying out this invention there is provided a tubular comb back 10 the underside of which is cut away as at 11 to provide a segmento-circular channel 12. Each Serial No. 673,258.

tooth 13 of the comb is provided with a segmento-circular butt or base 14C flanked on its sides by shoulders 15. The base is so proportioned as to fit closely in the tubular back when so positioned the shoulders 15 engage the side edges of the channel.

Alternating with the teeth are spacers each having a sevmento-circular body 16 and a shouldered end 17, the body and shouldes corresponding in size and shape to the butt portions of the teeth and, like them, fitting in. the channel and against its edges. The cut away portion is slightly longer than the space occupied by the teeth and spacers sol that these elements may be inserted in the back by lpositioning them angularly with reference to said back, slipping them into place and then rotating them to lie transversely of said back.

In order to hold the teeth and spacers pressed closely together in proper relation one end of the back is retained in its tubular form and is internally threaded while the remaining' end is closed by a partition 18. Through the threaded end is screwed the threaded end 19 c-f a handle supporting shank 20, and after the teeth and spacers have been assembled in the back, this shank is screwed up until its extremity engages the end tooth and compresses the set of teeth and spacers against the partition 18.

On the shank 20 is mounted a handle which is held in position by a nut 23, a washer 22 being preferably interposed between the adjacent ends of the handle and back as shown.

In use the comb portion of the device is suitably heated and drawn through the hair, the operation being repeated as many times as may be found necessary to eliminate the kinks or waves.

There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

1. In a comb of the class described, a back consisting'- of a tubular member cut away on one side for a portion of its length to provide a segmento-circular channel, a
