J. S. NEWLON SHAVING BRUSH AND SOAP HOLDER Filed Sept. 1 1922 INV EN TOR.
" #60 ATTORNEY.
Patented Oct. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
JOHN S. NEWLON, OF BUTLER, MISSOURI.
7 SHAVING BRUSH AND SO'AP HOLDER.
Application filed September 1, 1922. Sen'al No. 585,663.
durable, and with whichthe bristles, when the brush is not in use, may be concealed in the handle so as to be out of contact with dirt or dust, and the lather, which may be on the bristles, is prevented from contacting with extraneous objects.
My invention provides further a shaving brush having a tubular handle in which soap may be kept for shaving purposes, and in which the bristles may be disposed when the brush is not in use, novel means being provided by which the bristles and lather carried thereby may be kept out of contact with the soap carried in the handle.
My invention provides still further a shaving brush having a tubular handle into which the bristles may be swung when the brush is not in use, and from which'the bristles may be made to project when the brush is to be used.
My invention provides further novel means for releasably firmly holding the bristle carrying member in the operative position, such means including a cover which closes the opening in the handle through which the bristles swing in passing to and from. the operative position.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
'In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, f
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my-improved shaving brush, the bristles being disposed 1n the handle.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the bristles shown in the operative position.
Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross, section-on the line 44 v of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 55of Fig. 3. v I
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
The v ng brush is provided with a handle comprising a tubular body, which may consist of two tubular members 1 and 2, disposed end to end and which are fitted over and rigidlyv secured to an annular 7 flange 3, Fig. 3, provided on a transverse plate 4', which extends across the handle and forms a partition, which divides the handle into two compartments 5 and 6.
The member 1 has an open outer end and is provided with a lateral opening 7' which extends from the vpartition 4 to the open end of the member 1, and which is adapted to be closed by a cover 8, which is hinged by means of a transverse pin 9 to an ear 10,
with which the partition plateAc is at the outer side ofthe handle.
A bristle supporting member 11 carrying bristles 12 is pivotally mounted in the member 1- adjacent to the open end of the latter by a transverse pin 13 mounted at its ends respectively in the opposite sides of the member 1, whereby the supporting member 11 may be swung from the position shown in solid lines in Figs. 2 and 3, to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
When the cover 8 is open, the bristles 12 provided in passing from the projecting position to the position in the handle, will pass through the opening 7.
For releasably holding the member 11 in the position shown in Fig. 2, and in solid lines in Fig. 1, the member 11 is provided with a peripheral annular flange 14 adapted to'be sprung into an arcuate groove 15 provided in the member 1 adjacent to the open end thereof. A similar arcuate groove 16 is provided in the covers, to receive the annular flange 14.
To enable the-cover 8 being-easily opened,
its free end may be provided with a finger hold 17 To releasably hold the cover closed, it may be provided at opposite side edges respectively with two ears 18 adapted to respectively engage projections 19 provided respectively in opposite sides of the member 1.
The open end of the handle member 2 is adapted to receive a removable closure 20 which is provided with two diametrically opposite laterally extending pins 21 adapted to respectively enter two right-angled slots 22 provided in the adjacent end of the member 2.
The member 20 is preferably provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 28, in which may be fixed the outer end of a cylindrical bar of soap 24, into which may extend inwardly extending projections 25 punched inwardly from the flange 23. By turning the closure 20 in the proper direction and then withdrawing it, the soap may be withdrawn for use.
lVhen it is desired to store the bristles 12 in the handle, the cover 8 is swung to the open position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, after which the member 11 and bristles 12 may be swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, afterwhich the cover 8 is swung to the closed position and snapped into locked engagement with the projections 19 of the member 1.
The partition 4; serves the double function of a pivotal support for the cover and to keep lather or moisture from entering the chamber 6 from the chamber 5.
If desired, the member 2 may be removed from the flange 3, upon which the member 1 and cover 8 will serve the function of a handle for the brush.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 2- 1. A shaving brush comprising a tubular body having an open end and a lateral opening communicating therewith and having adjacent to said open end an arcuate groove, a partition dividing said body into two compartments, one of which communicates with said opening, a bristle supporting member pivoted to said body so as to be swung through said opening from a position in which the bristles will be disposed in said body to a position in which the bristles will project from said open end, said member having a peripheral flange adapted to'be sprung into said groove, when the bristles are in the last named position, and a cover hinged to said partition and adapted to close said opening.
2. A shaving brush comprising a tubular body consisting of two tubular members disposed end to end, one of which has a lateral opening and an open end, a transverse partition mounted in the other end of the mem her having the lateral opening, and having an annular flange fitted in the adjacent end of the other member, a bristle supporting member movable through said opening to and from a position in which the bristles will project from said open end, and a cover hinged to said partition and adapted to close said opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN S. NEWLON.
