UN TED STATES PATENT GEEIoE WILLIAM W. AMOS, OF OLATHE, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,278, dated September 2'2, 1874; application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. Arms, of Olat-he, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and. valuable Improvement in Bed-Bottoms and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal sectional view of my spring bed -bottom, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional detail view of the same.
This invention has relation to invalid and other spring-beds; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be herein aftermore full y described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary bedstead-frame, having side ledges a to support the spring bed-bottom. At the ends of these ledges next the head-board are provided ratchetsb, in which the pawls of the adjustable head-frame are adjusted to bring it into a higher or lower position. B designates the transverse springframes, which support the longitudinal slats c of the bed-bottom. Along the outer edges of these slats c are arranged series of hooks k, suitably spaced for the passage of the fastenin g-cord a under said hooks, and over the bedslats, which are thus interwoven in the cord, and bound thereby on the upper surface of the uppermost spring-slat. These hooks 7c are turned inward-that is to say, downward in the upper slat, and upward in the lower slatto better secure the cord and prevent catching into and tearing the bed-tickin g. These springframes, being reversible, are turned when permanently bent down by use, the slats recorded on the other side, and the bed-bottom is thus brought up into comfortable shape. Two of these transverse spring-frames are generally sufficient, one being located near the head, the other near the foot, of the bed-bottom. 0 indicates the adjustable head-frame' This consists of longitudinal slats l, arranged to fit in the spaces .between the bed-slats c, and connected at their rising ends by a transverse tie, m, attached to their upper surfaces, and at their other ends, which are below the bedslats c. by a similar tie, 8, attached to their lower surfaces.
For the purpose of raising the head-frame,
a strap or cord, 20, may be attached to the upper tie m, and it may be readily lowered by means of an operatingoord, 2, attached to a transverse rod, g, connecting the props near their lower ends.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the bed-slat c and the reversible sprin g-frames B, of the bindingcord 00 and the double series of hooks is, turned inward or toward each other, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM WILSON AMOS.
