To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Serafina, in the county of San Miguel and State of New-Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stationery and the primary object of the invention is to provide a combined pen and pencil and ink eraser attachment for pens and pencils, which can be made a part of the pen or pencil or as a separate portion thereof.

Another object of this invention is to provide a novel eraser embodying a spherical shaped head having a plurality of arcuate scraping knives formed thereon, and rubber inserts arranged between the knives' A further object of the invention is .to provide novel means for connecting the spherical erasing head to the pen or pencil.

A further ob ect of the invention is to v provide a casing for receiving the erasing head and novel means for projecting the erasing head from the casin A still further object of t e invention is toprovide an improved device of the above character, which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically de-; scribed, claimed and illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings" in detail,

wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates one form of the invention which comprises a spherical shaped head 10. This head 10 can be provided at equa-distantly spaced point with a plurality of arcuate s aped cutting knives 11, which can be utilizied for scratching ink lines, or erasing ink lines, when necessary. These knives as shown are arranged around the head 10; This head can be formed solid or hollow, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. I also prefer to arrange between the cutting knives 11 rubber inserts 12 which can be utilized for erasing pencil marks when desired. The rubber insert,12 can be secured in place in any desired way and if preferred, a suitable adhesive can be used for this purpose.

While I have shown in Figure 1 of the drawings the cutting knives 11 arranged all around the head 10, one half of the head can be left smooth as indicated by the reference character 13 in-Figure 6 of the drawings so that the smooth portion of the head can be used to smooth down the paper after the ink mark have been erased therefrom by one of the cutting knives 11. If it is not smooth as shown in Figure 6, a portion of the upper half can be left smooth as shown in Figure 7 of the drawings and indicated by the reference character 14.

The im roved eraser includes the cylindrical body 15 which can be considered as forming a part of a pen or pencil and which has the outer end thereof closed by a cap 16. Thi cap or closure plate 16 is hingedly connectedto thecylindrical body 15 by the use of a uitable hinge 17.

Slidably mounted within the cylindrical body 15.is a'split sleeve 18 which is adapted to snugly engage the inner surface of the body so that the same will be held in any desired position in the body. The erasing head 10 is connected with the sleeve 18 in any desired way, such as by a reduced shank 19. I

In order to force the erasing head 10 from out of the body 15, the sleeve 18 is circumferentially provided with a radially extending o erati in pin 20 which protrudes throu h a ongiis obvious that when it is desired to move the head 10 from out of the body, the in 20 can be grasped and forced upwar y. WVhen it is desired to return the head inside of the body the pin 20 can be again grasped and forced downwardly.

By this construction, it can be seen that the cutting or erasing head 10 is normally hid from view and protected from dust and the like. v

In Figure 7 of the drawings I have shown a modified form of the attachment indicated by the reference character B which is adapted to be used with the ordinary type e of pencil and is adapted to he slid on t outer end thereof This type B of course embodies the cutting or erasing head 10 and the shank 19. The-shank 19in this instance is attached to'the, outer end ofa relatively long sleeve 26 which is split longitudinally as at 27 to permit the ready placing thereof on a pencil. Owingto theinherent resiliency of the metal from which the sleeve 26 is formed, the same efiiciently grips the pencil ends and thus prevents loss of the eraser. v

1. In an eraser of the character described,

a spherical head having a plurality of arcuate scratching knives-formed thereon extending oircumferentially thereof, and rubber strips fitted around the head between the scratching knives 2.
