G. FLYNN COPY HOLDER FiledJan. 22, 1946 HI NIL. Hm li In 30 D T D- INVENTOR GRACE FLYNN izfm'w ATTORNEYS,
Patented June 8, 1948 UNITED PATENT 2,442,870 coriznot'iiiiit Grate Flynn, North aas; N; a; Application january 22, 191%; Serial in. iiiflflli- 1 can. itt is) from one line to another as the copying progresses.
A further object is to provide a device in which the line guide is easily movable and is at all times kept accurately related to the line which is being copied.
A still further object is to provide a device which can be opened easily to remove sheets at will and to insert new sheets and in which the sheets are otherwise always held firmly in the grasp of the engaging elements to prevent accidental shifting thereof 7 Further and more specific objects, features, and advantages will more clearly appear from the specification hereinafter set forth especially when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate a present preferred form which the invention may assume and which forms part of the specification.
Generally and briefly considered, the invention comprises a pair of hinged plates, preferably elongated, which are adapted to grasp directly between them the edges of sheets along the margin thereof outside of the line of material thereon. When I refer herein to written matter it is to be understood that I mean to include not only pen writing or pencil writing but also typed or printed matter disposed in lines on the sheet.
Particularly the hinged plates are provided with means which constantly urges them toward each other so that the sheet will be firmly gripped.
More particularly the top plate lying over the sheet is provided with a line guide member slidable thereon, which line guide member extends at right angles to the length of the plates and is adapted manually to be moved to lie successively just beneath the line being copied.
Still more particularly the device is one which can be easily attached to the edges of the leaves of a book, a pile of sheets of loose typewritten matter such as a patent specification, or any other sheets. It may be applied to one sheet at a time or may be disposed to grasp a plurality of sheets at will.
The present preferred form which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawings of which,
s g "as members dispose'cl'ahd the 'fdrrfi' erinage a w s e nines l f id n m' nu 1|, havin flat cdfifrohtifig faces adapted respectively to lie over and under the edges of the sheet or sheets or pages D and directly grip- 25 them therebetween. The plates l0 and II may be constructed of any rigid material such as metal but for lightness of weight I prefer to make them of a plastic material. In the form shown the top plate H) has cut-away recesses l2, in which are 30 disposed knuckles I3 on the bottom plate ll, thus forming elements of a hinge. The top plate [0 and the knuckles [3 are bored to receive a hinge rod M which is preferably of material which is resilient to twisting movements thereof. As shown in Figure 2 the rod I4 is pinned to top plate ID by means of pin [5 and is pinned at the other end by means of pin 16 to the knuckle [3 of the lower end of plate I I. The top plate is provided with an interior longitudinally extending passage or groove H to which is connected a lateral flat passage I8 of smaller cross section opening through the right hand side of the top plate. This narrower passage I8 is curved to slope downwardly at its outer portion and receives the inner end of a line guide bar I!) which is bent to make its lower side or face flush with the gripping face of the plate l0, so as to lie closely across the sheet D immediately beneath the top plate ID. The inner end of the bar l9 conforms to the curvature of the narrower passage l8 and at its innermost portion is connected to a transverse head which is relatively large and engages shoulders at the junction of the passages l1 and I8 and is adapted to 65 slide in the passa e H. The head 20 is held resiliently in adjusted position in the passage I! by means of a flat spring 2| connected to the outer face thereof, said spring bearing against the opposite wall of the passage IT. This construction permits the head to be slid along the passage l1 but causes it to be held in the position shown against accidental movement when at rest so that the line guide bar l9 will extend truly at right angles to the top plate l and in parallelism with the lines of material on the sheet D. a
In the operation of the device, and with the parts constructed and arranged as shown and described, the plates I0 and II are separated by hand and the sheet or sheets D are inserted therein so that the right hand edge of top plate III will lie along the margin of the paper with it lying outside the left edge of the material on the sheet which is to be copied and with the line guide bar 19 lying parallel with the lines of material. The plates are allowed to move together to grip the sheet. This movement is automatic under the action of the spring rod M which, by opening of the plates, has been twisted and therefore has resistance to the opening and will move the plates back to gripping position as soon as they are released to do so. It is clear that the operator will then manually dispose the bar 19 below the line first to be copied and when that line is copied she will slide the bar down another line and so on. The device directly grips the sheet to be copied or a series of sheets as the case may be; it is extremely simple in construction and therefore very cheap to produce; it is easy to apply and remove and to operate; and it may be applied to a loose sheet, a pile of loose sheets or to the leaves of a book as desired.
While the invention has been described in detail with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to such details and form since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and 4 scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications which may come within the language or scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A copy holder comprising a pair of plates adapted to receive between them a sheet to be copied, a hinge connection for the plates, comprising means for holding the plates in clamping position when released, one of said plates having ;a relatively large longitudinal passage therein and a narrower passage communicating with the larger longitudinal passage along one side thereof, said narrow passage being open along the oposite side and sloping adjacent the open side towards the gripping face of said plate, a head disposed insaid large passage, a line guide bar connected to said head and extending transversely through said narrower passage and out over the sheet in parallelism with the lines of material thereon, said bar being bent in the sloping part of said narrow passage to make its under face substantially flush with the gripping face of said plate, and resilient means on the head to engage the interior of said larger passage to permit the head to be slid along said passages and to hold it in adjusted position.
