Description
UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM K. STEVENS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING AND EXTENSION TRESTL E S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,049, dated September 15, 1874 application filed July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM K. STEVENS, of
Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and Improved Folding and Extension Staging-Horse, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a pair of vertical posts with braces jointed to them at the top to fold against the posts for packing away, and having other braces to hold them in the extended position for use, and the posts are made in two parts, placed a little apart and connected by cross-pieces to form guides, in which extension-posts connected by a cross beam at the top work up and down to vary the height of the bench, making a simple and cheap bench for plasterers and others to use for holding stagings inside of rooms of different heights. The extension-posts arefastened at any required height by pins put in holes in them above the cross-bars of the main posts.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved folding and extension bench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bench. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of' it when folded up for storing away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the main posts, which consist of two light parallel pieces of wood placed a little distance apart and connected by crosspieces B, of metal or wood. 0 represents the braces, which are also of light pieces of wood, and are hinged to the posts at the top D, for
folding against the posts to pack away when not in use, and are provided with other short braces, E, to hold them when extended to support the posts. These braces are preferably made of iron bars, and are pivoted to the posts at F, and hook onto a pin in the side of the braces at G, so as to be readily detached, and also so as to lock securely against working loose or detaching accidentally. H represents the extension-posts, which are fitted between the two parts of the main posts and their connecting-bars, so as to slide up and down freely, and have a series of pin-holes, I, to be supported at different points by a piece, J, which" projects at the ends and rests upon some of the cross-bars B. K represents the cross-beam connecting the extension-posts at the top, to support the planks of the scaffold.
This bench is believed to be more simple and cheap, and easier of adjustment than other benches for the same purpose now in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of posts A A, connected by cross-pieces B, slide H, and braces O O E E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HIRAM K. STEVENS.
