Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
GEORGE W.I SOULE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-PACKING-PRESSES.
' Specification forming part of `Letters Patent No. 155,047, vdated September 15, 1874; application tiled July 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SoULE, of Boston, of the county of Sui'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful [mprovementin Box-Packing Presses; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of a press provided with my invention.
My invention consists in a bar provided with two toothed racks, in combination with a'screw, a base or bar, a standard, and two bent arms furnished with claws'and studs, all being substantially as hereinafter explained, the whole constituting an exceedingly convenient; effective, and useful means of setting down the cover or contents of a case or box in the process ot packing the same. The toothed racks with the studs of the clawed arms, enable said arms to be readily applied to boxes, as they may vary in size.
1n such drawings, A denotes the screw, provided with a handle, B, and pivoted at its foot to a base or bar, C, and at or near its head to a quadripod or standard, D, erected on and fastened to such base, all being as shown. The said screw screws into and through the middle of a bar, E, having racks of teeth formed upon its upper edges, and arranged in manner as shown at F F. Two bent or right-angular arms, G G, formed as represented, and provided at their lower ends with claws or teeth a a, and at their upper ends with studs b b, all as shown, co-operate with the toothed bar E, the studs being placed in the racks, and nearer to or farther from the screw, as circumstances ymay require, the arms being arranged with the bar E and the base Cin manner as shown. ,v The base C, which may be termed the press-head, is a ilat bar furcated or slotted at its ends to receive the levers G G, which pass down through the said base or press-head, the arms being free to move within it.
In order to use the said press in packing a case or box with merchandise, it is to be placed a-straddle of the box with the base resting upon the cover or one or more blocks or boards placed thereon, after which the teeth a a are to be driven into the opposite sides of the box. This having been done, the screw should be revolved so as to depress the base, until the box-cover may be set down to the required position.
What I claim as my invention is- The bar E, provided with the racks F F, in combination with the screw A, the base C, standard D, and the bent arms G G, provided with the teeth or claws a a and the studs b b, all being arranged substantially as specified and represented.
