Description

M. T. NESBITT.
' Butter-Mold.
No. 212,970 Patented Mar. 4, 1879.
W657i as sea;
MOSES T. NESBITT, OF GOLORA, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTE R-MOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 12,970, dated March 4, 1879 application filed January 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. T. NESBITT, of Golora, in the county of Cecil and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Molding and Printing Butter and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the follower and print-block, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to machines for molding and printing butter; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The frame or bench A has two uprights, B B, provided at their upper end-with crosspieces 0 O, forming the box D. Said box is provided with a hinged cover, E, the hinge of which should be adjustable, in order to enable the cover, which should fit very closely,
.to be readily refittedif, by the pressure incurred in molding the butter, it should be strained.
F is a fiat wooden spring, secured by means of a wedge, G. Spring F has at its upper end a hook, H, adapted to keep the cover of the box closed while the process of printing is going on. I
I is a follower, sliding vertically in box D. It is provided with a shank, J, having a slot, K, in which is pivoted the end of a lever, L, fulcrumed in an upright, M, rear of the box. The upright M projects upwardly far enough to form a support for the cover E when open.
The follower I is recessed, as represented at N, to accommodate the fingers O on the under side of the print-block P, which, while thus readily detachable from the follower, is held securely by the latter during the operation of the machine.
In operation, the butter is placed in box D, on top of the print-block. The cover is then closed and held by the spring-catch F H, while, by means of the lever L, the follower is forced upwardly in the box, thus molding and printing the butter. The cover may now be opened and the'print-block removed with the print upon it.
It will be seen that the spring-catch F H is adjustable vertically, thus enabling the cover of the box to be held tightly closed.
All the parts of the machine being wood,
there is nothing to rust. The parts are also detachable from the bench and from each other, and the machine may therefore be easily cleaned after use.
The print-block being detachable from the follower, it is unnecessary to touch or manipulate the print with the hands.
The print-box may be divided into two compartments, each having a separate cover, spring-catch, follower, and print-block, thus enabling prints of different size to be formed in the same press. In this case the lever with its upright may be adjustable to either cornpartment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with the follower I, having recess N, of the detachable printblock P, having fingers O, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
2. The herein-described machine for molding and printing butter, consisting, essentially, of the box D, having hinged cover E, vertically-adjustable spring-catch F H, follower I, print-block P, upright M, and operating-lever L, the whole arranged upon a suitable bench, A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES TAYLOR NESBITT.
Witnesses:
