To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NIorroLAs LoNeonIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hidalgo, in the county of Hidalgo and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Figure Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to figure wheeled toys, and embodies amongst other features, a pair of toy figures mounted within a wagon body for reciprocatory movement, and adapted to be alternately projected above the top of said body, while arranged above the body and centrally thereof is a revolving figure representing a person holding a club, and striking at each reciprocatory figure as the latter is projected above the Wagon body, the movements of all of said figures being timed so that the club held by the revolving figure barely misses the particular reciprocating figure, as the latter starts to descend within the wagon body.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts as claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:

Referring to the drawing in detail 10 represents a wagon body which may be of any suitable construction, and also vary in size and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention. This bony is preferably mounted upon a supporting structure 11 which is suitably secured to the bottom of the wagon as indicated at 12. This supporting structure includes spaced parallel depending flanges 13 between which is journaled a crank shaft 14;, the crank portion of this shaft being indicated at 15. The shaft has mounted thereon ground wheels 16, and consequently when the toy is drawn over the ground or surface, the shaft is rotated by the wheels 16, 17 rep- Serial No. 718,940.

resents a handle of any suitable construction by means of which the toy is moved over the ground or surface.

Rising centrally from the bottom of the wagon body is a vertical shaft 18, and this shaft projects both above the top of the wagon body and also beneath the bottom thereof as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The shaft may be journaled in any suitable mannerfor rotation, and carries at its lower end a horizontally disposed toothed wheel 19 which is arranged to cooperate with a similar toothed wheel 20 fixed upon the shaft 14: and arranged at a right angle to said toothed wheel 19. These wheels 19 and v20 respectively may consist of gears of any suitable construction, but as shown in this specific instance, these wheels are preferably stamped from a single piece of material, each including four teeth equidistantly spaced apart with the wheels so a ranged that as the shaft 1 1 rotates, the teeth of the wheel 20 work between the teeth of the wheel 19, thereby rotating the shaft 18 for a purpose to be presently described. Supported on the upper end of this shaft 18 is a toy figure 21 which represents a person holding a club 22 in an extended position as for use. While said figure may represent any person, by preference it is designed to represent a policeman supporting his club in a forward horizontal position, so that when theshaft 18 is rotated, the figure 21 is revolved giving the appearance of the policeman using his club in the act of striking.

Journaled between the opposed sides of the wagon body is a shaft 23, and supported on this shaft is a rod 24 which is arranged longitudinally of the wagon body as illustrated in Figure 2. Each end of this rod supports the bust of a toy figure indicated at 25, these figures being designed to resemble two persons, which are adapted to be alternately projected above the top or cover 26 of the wagon body. This cover is arranged between a pair of inwardly directed lugs 27 formed on the upper edges of the opposed sides of the wagon body and shown in Figure 4, while carried by the opposed ends of the cover 26 are bendable lugs 28 which are adapted to be bent over the upper edges of the end walls of the wagon body for the purpose of removably attaching the cover in position. This cover is also formed with a pair of longitudinally arranged openings 29 which are disposed in alignment as shown in Figure 5, and is also provided with an opening 30 through which the shaft 18 projects. The toy figures 25 which are mounted upon the opposite ends of the rod 24: are arranged to pass through the adjacent openings 29 in the cover, when the rod 24 is rocked to reciprocate the figures 25. In other words when the rod 2 1 is rocked .in one direction, one ofthe figures 25 is projected above the top of the wagon through the adjacent openings 29, at which timethe other figure is lowered through said opening to a position within the wagon body, and when the rod is rocked in an opposite direction the positions of the figures are just reversed. For imparting such rocking movement to the rod 24, and thereby causing the figures 25 to be alternately projected above the top of the wagon body, I make use of an arm 31 which is terminally connected withthe crank portion 15 of the shaft orv axle 14. This arm projects within the wagon body through aligned slots 32 and33 formed in the bottom of the wagon body andthe supporting structure 13. The upper. end of this arm is formed with a longitudinal slot 34 which receives a pin 35 projecting at a rightangle from the rod 24, and therefore it is manifest, that when the shaft .14tisrotatecl movement is imparted to-the arm 31 to rock the rod 24 for the purpose specified.-

In practice, when the toy is moved over the ground or surface, the crank shaft let being rotatedcauses the rod 24 to be rocked, and consequently the toy figures 2% are reciprocated and alternately projected through the openingsvin the top or cover 26. Simultaneous with this movement, the shaft 18 is rotated, causing the toy figure 2st to revolve upon the top or. cover 26 ofthe wagon body, and the movements of the various figures is such, that the club 22 is always swung in the direction of the particular figure 25 being projected above the top orcover 26. This affords, the appearance of the policeman strikingvat the person or figure 25 being projected above the top of the wagon body, but the movements of the respective figures are so timed, that the club 22 is allowedto reach the particular figure 25 being projected above the wagon body with such close prox imity, as to make it appear as though the said figure will be struck by the club held by the policeman, but the said figure 25 starts to descend or return to its position within the wagon body apparently at the last moment, and thus allows the club to swingover the head of said figure without coming in;v contact with the same. This timing of the figures with regard to their relative movements issassisted by the use of a coil spring or; other-resilient element indicatedat 36, one end ofwhich is secured to the wagon body and the other end secured to the offset end portion of the shaft 23, the spring serving to retard the movement of this shaft, thereby affording the particular figure which occupies a projected position above the top of the wagon, time to start to descend and make its disappearance within the wagon body, just before the club 22 passes over the head of the figure 25. Just as the offset end portion oi? the shaft 23 reaches a direct horizontal position, the spring also operates to quickly turn the shaft to lower the descending figure within the wagon 10. The toy is very simple in construction and can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost, and the toy is unquestionably designed to afiord young children considerable pleasure and amuse ment by its use.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, l desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

l Vhat I claim is:

1. A wheeled toy. comprising a cart, a rod mounted within the cart for rocking movement, toy figures supported on the ends of said rod and adapted to be alternately projected above the top of said cart, means for rocking said rod, a toy figure arranged centrally 0t and above said cart, said figure representing a person holding a club in a forward horizontal position, a vertical rod supporting the center figure and mounted for rotation, and means for rotating the last mentioned rod to afiord the appearance of said person alternately striking at each ot the first mentioned figures as it is projected above the top of said cart.

2. A wheeled toy comprising a cart, a rod mounted within the cart for rocking move ment, toy figures supported .on the ends o't said rod and adapted to be alternately projected above the top of said cart, a toy figure arranged centrally 0t and above said cart, and mounted for rotation, said figure representing a person holding a club in a forwardly extended position, means for rotating the last mentioned figure to afford the appearance of said person stri at each 01 the first mentioned toy figures as it is projected above the cart, and means for timing the movements of said figures, whereby the said figure carried by the rod starts to descend just prior to the passing of the club over the head of said figure as described.

3. A wheeled toy comprising a cart, a crank shaft journaled thereon, wheels fixed on said shaft, a rod arranged within the cart and mounted for rocking movement, means actuated by the crank shaftfor rocking said rod, toy figures supported on the end of said lli) rod and adapted to be alternately projected above the cart, a toy figure arranged centrally of and above said cart and mounted for rotation, said figure representing a person holding a club in a forwardly extended position, means actuated from said crank shaft for rotating said figure, and thereby afford the appearance of said person represented by the figure striking at the particular figure being projected above the cart, and means for timing the movements of said figures, whereby the particular figure struck at starts to descend within the cart just before the club passes over the head of said figure as described.

A wheeled toy comprising a cart, a crank shaft journaled thereon, wheels fixed with said shaft, a rod arranged within the cart and mounted for rocking movement, a pin projecting from said rod, an arm connected with the crank portion of said shaft and slidable through a slot in the bottom of said cart, said arm having a slot for the figures mounted on the ends of said rod and adapted to be alternately projected above the top of said cart, a toy figure arranged centrally of and above said cart, means for mounting said figure for rotation, said figure representing a person holding a club in forwardly extended position, means for rotating said figure incident to the rotation of said crank shaft, thereby affording the appearance of said figure striking at one of the figures carried by the rod when projected above said cart, and means for timing the movements of said figures, whereby the particular figure struck at starts to descend within the cart just prior to the passing of the club over the head of said figure.
