To 1N 1li/1.0m 'aft may Concern Bc it known that I, FRANCIS GoDrnnY BAKER, a subject of the King of England, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Galloping Tricycle Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more particularly to what I term a galloping tricycle horse wherein the galloping action is produced by the front wheel drive mechanism.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toy having a hingedly -connected front body portion and a front wheel drive mechanism embodying a crank shaft associated with the front wheel in such manner that its rotation will elevate the body and oscillate the front legs simulating` the galloping action of a horse.
A further object of my invention is to provide a front wheel drive mechanism for toys embodying a novel and improved strap l and crank shaft connected to the hub of the front wheel and to the front body portion of the toy in such manner that an oscillatory motion will be imparted to the toy as the front wheel is rotated.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplate-d, drawings, depicting a. preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,
Figure 1 is a side view showing the embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the front wheel drive at the bottom of its downward stroke from that shown by Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the front wheel drive mechanism in its relation to the body and front legs of the toy.
Figure 4 is a detailed view showing the relation of the crank axle to the wheel hub.
Deferring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the body of the toy, 6 the seat and 7 the rear supporting wheels, which may be mounted on the axle and suitable attaching straps. The hea-d and front portion of the body 8 is preferably hinged as indicated by numeral 9 so that the toy may be turned in a comparatively small area. The front legs 10 are pivotally connected to the lower portion 11 of the hinged front head and body 8 at the fixed pivot 12 so that the legs may rock or move relatively to the body of the horse. y
In order to affect this movement, in conjunction with the front drive mechanism, I have provided a U-shaped strap 13 which is bent upwardly as at 14 and connected by a cross bolt 15, said bolt passing through the vertical arms 16 of the bent strap. The

Extending through the U-shaped strap 13 at a point adjacent the bend 14, I have provided a crank shaft 17, the arms 18 of which are bent outwardly as at 19a and attached to the lower ends of a fork 20, the upper ends of said fork being imbedded in the body or front section 8 of the toy. The crank shaft is connected to the hub 19 of the front wheel 2O by plates 21. Suitable pedals 22 are secured to the strap 13 whereby the child may operate the front drive mechanism, being located substantially on a line with the hinged front head and body portion 8 so that the toy may be turned in a comparatively small circle, while the front drive mechanism is operated.
From the above construction, it will be observed that as the child exerts` downward pressure on the pedals, the crank shaft will be rotated, in which instance, the fork will raise the front hinged section of the body and at the same time produce an oscillatory motion to the front legs. When the yoke 13 is at its extreme downward position and the body has been raised to its maximum height, the operation of the front drive is continued by reason of the fact that the crank shaft is thrown past its upper dead center and that the weight of the child will tend to rotate the crank shaft and the front wheel connected thereto as the body rocks downwardly. The downward pressure on the foot pedals and the U-shaped strap may thus be regarded as a body elevating action in which the child may raise the body of IDO llO

n messie he toy and on the other hand, when the crank shaft is thrown past the upper dead center, the fork attached to the body will tend to bring it downwardly in which instance, the rear portion of the U-shaped strap rises and with it., the pedals for the repeated operation. A galloping action is thus produced to the body and the hinged front p0rtion thereof at the same time imparting motion to the front wheel. Of course, the operation is such that the toy may be operated forwardly or backwardly. I desire particu` larly to call attention to what term the lag or relative distance of a line drawn through the hub of the wheel and the crank shaft whereby the front body portion of the toy may be raised and the crank shaft thrown past the dead center so that the weight of the child will produce the downward motion of the body necessary for the continued operation of the toy.
lVhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction er otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of tbe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is l. ik toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported sectional body having a front drive wheel, a crank shaft cooilierating with the drive wheel, means connecting the crank shaft with the front of the body and foot operated means for actuating said crank shaftto rock the said body.

A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected to the front section, a wneel hub and front drive wheel, a crank shaft connected to the hub of the front drive wheel, means connecting the crank shaft with the hinged section to rock the body and foot operated means for actuating said crank shaft and oscillate the front legs of the body.

A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected to the lower portion of the hinged section, a front drive wheel, a crank shaft cooperating with the drive wheel, a fork connecting the crank shaft with the front section, and foot operated means for actuating the crank shaft and oscillate the front hinged section and the said legs.

A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected t-o the lower portion of the hinged section, a front drive wheel, a crank shaft cooperating with the drive wheel, a fork rigidly connected to the body at one end and to the crank shaft at its opposite end, and foot operated means for throwing the crank shaft past the upper dead center whereby the weight on the body may continue the rotation of the front drive wheel.

A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected to the lower portion of the hinged section, a front drive wheel, a. crank shaft and plates connecting the crank shaft with the drive wheel, a fork connecting the ends of the crank shaft with the hinged front section, and a foot operated bent yoke for actuating said crank shaft and oscillate the front legs.
8. A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected to the hinged section, a front drive wheel, a crank shaft for operating the drive wheel, a fork connected to the body and the crank shaft, a yoke and pedals attached thereto for actuating the crank shaft, the upper end of said yoke being connected to the legs, the opposite end of said yoke moving in the path of an ellipse and adapted to throw the crank shaft past its upper dead center while the said yoke is travelling downwardly.
9. A toy of the class described comprising a wheel supported body having a hinged front section, legs pivotally connected to the front section, a front drive wheel, a crank shaft rigidly connected to the hub of the drive wheel at a point o'tll center, said crank shaft being bent outwardly and having a fork connected thereto, the upper end of the fork being embedded in the hinged front section and foot operated means for actuating` said crank shaft.
