To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS M. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Lisbon, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Dancing Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has to do with improvements in mechanical dancing'toys. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a mechanical dancing toy which can be cheaply made from pressed sheet metal and from rods and other simple mechanical elements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy which shall be of attractive appearance and novel arrangement and in which the movements of the toy dancing fig ure are secured my momentum. In this connection, another object of the invention is to make use of a momentum element which shall operate in the open and adjacent to the dancing figure so as to give a very novel and attractive appearance to the completed toy.
Other objects and uses of the invention will appear from a detailed description of the same, which consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The base portion of the toy comprises an inverted cup 5 preferably having its lower edge 6 beaded as shown particularly in Fig. 3. A bracket 7 extends downwardly from the top 8 of the base member the lower portion 9 of said bracket being extended horizontally and then folded backwardly as shown at 10.

base member, and the lower end of said shaft 11 extends down through a hole 12 in the portion 9 of the bracket 7. he lower end 13 of the shaft 11 is preferably pointed and sets into a conical recess 1 1 in the end 10 of the bracket 7 which thus constitutes a foot bearing.
A block 15 has a bottom socket 16 adapted to receive the upper end 17 of the shaft 11, and to fit on the same sufiiciently tight to cause the shaft and the block to rotate together. Nevertheless, ,the block can be slipped off of the shaft without difiicultv. Extending down from the block 15 are the arms 18 and 19 which reach down at an angle and carry the weights 20 and 21 at their lower ends. These arms 18 and 19 are set into sockets 22 and 23 in the lower portion of the block 15 sufiiciently tight to be ordinarily held in place, but they can be removed from the block 15 without difficulty when so desired.
The block 15, arms 18 and 19, and weights 20 and 21 constitute a fly wheel having suflicient mass and inertia to drive the toy for a reasonable length of time. I
Extending through the top 8 of the base member and through the horizontal arm 9 of the bracket 7 is the vertically oscillatable rod 24:. Connected to this rod is a stop arm 25 which is adapted to engage the shaft 11 or a sleeve on said shaft and thus the rod 24 is prevented from turning in the same direction as the shaft 1.1. A finger 26 is also connected to the rod 24., said finger carrying a roller 27. On the lower end of the shaft 11 is a plate 28 which has one or more downwardly curved fingers 29 each of which con stitute in effect a cam adapted to pass under the roller 27 and lift the same as the shaft 11 is turned in the direction of the arrows in Figs. 2 and 3. Each time one of the cam surfaces passes beneath the roller 27, the rod 24 will be raised and then allowed to drop with a consequent vibrating movement.
A suitable figure 30 is mounted on the upper portion of the rod 24; so that said figure is caused to dance up and down as the toy is operated. This figure can be secured to the rod in any suitable manner as by means of a clip 31 embracing the rod against the back side of the figure, said clip being held in place by one or more ears 32 which pass through the figure. If desired, a sleeve 33 may be placed on the shaft 11 between the ber 28 SO as to keep the parts in proper relationship.
While I have herein shown and described only a single embodiment of the features,ol my present invention, still I do not limit myself to said embodiments exceptas I may do so in the claims.
Where in this specification and the claims to follow I use the expression figure or daneingpfigure 101 like expression, it will be understood,- that I donot-limit myself to figures of the particular form or constructlOIlnhQI'QiIl illustrated, but-that I contemplate any suitable form or construction of figure, whether it be a simulation of a human being, or animal, or inanimate conception.
I claim:
1. A mechanical toy comprising in combination a frame, a shaft journaled in the frame, connecting means von said sha -ft, a PELIPOI' IflCllfl-lly extending momentum arms on saidv connecting: means, a cam connected to the shaft, and an oscillatable rod extending through the frame and wqrlging in conjiinction with the cam, means for presenting rotation ofrsaid rod, and a figure carried by said rod, substantially as described.
2. A mechanical toy comprising in combination a frame, a vertical shaft journaled in the frame, connecting means on said shaft, apair-of-radially extending momentum arms connected to said means, a cam member 011 the shaft, an oscillatahle rod Working-through the frame, means on said rodrworkin g in,
