JOHN DEEMER, or vnw YORK, is. Y.
TOY."
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. DEEMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, county of NewfYork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of
which the following is a specification, reference, being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in' which similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates totoys', and has for its object to supply a-device of this character whichcomprises, in asimple and inexpensive construction, images! of either adapted to oscillate and maintain them in lifelike motion without the aid ofexpensive spring-motor or other complicated mechanism. i v.
'Thedevice comprises a manually operable rocker and a; normallyupright figure representationof an animate body or plurality thereof in pivotal connection with said rocker and having a depending weighted member, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims. V
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan shape producing my improved rocker. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the toy completely assembled. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionalview taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view showingthe device in motion. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a modification. Fig. 6 is a similar View showing a further modification; and Fig. 7 is a cross section taken on the line 7'7 ofFig.5.
e ,In the'example of my invention illustrated in the drawings a rocker A, is formed from a single disk of sheet metal or other pliable substance, as compressed fiber, shown 1n blank by Fig. 1 of saiddrawings, 1 This blank is provided with slits 1 and 2, making oppositely located parts 3,wh1ch are each pierced with a hole 4, and adapted when bent downwardly, or inwardly on thedotted lines 5, to form the hangers B, to which the.
images hereinafter described are pivoted,
and 7 also the slots o, through. which said Specification of Letterslatent. Patented Oct. 21, 1919. Application filed April 18, 1918.. Serial No. 229,248. i i i v arebent on'the dotted lines 5, into position shown'byFig. 3 of the drawings, thus produc ng a rocker embodying, in integral for- -mat1on, sldes C, a fiat top or platform D and the hangers B, having their-holes 4 in lateral register with each other making bearings for engagement with. pivots, or pins E, for supporting images, asF, G and Said images maybe composed of sheet material embodying armed figure representations of soldiers in contest, shown by Figs-2, 3 and t of the drawings. They may also comprise figure representations of various kinds ofanimate bodies engaged in a variety ofactions, as the flat images G, representing dancers and each having swinging arms and legs, as illustrated by Fig. 5 ofthe drawings; or thefull-jointed figure H,- shown' in Fig. 6. 1 p Each-image has a downwardly extended member'L- having fixed thereto a weight J ofsuch vproportion as tomaintain the image in normally uprightposition atright angles to the plane of the rocker top when the device is. at rest; and said images are respectivelymounted, in swinging relation with r of'images in contest, as the invention may be employed to depict dancing humanfigures or. figures of various animals in swinging motion, moving upwardly and downwardly.
In Fig. 5 of the'drawings I have illustrated a pair of dancing figures each having aswinging arm 7 and a swinging leg 8. In this construction the hangers B, are respectively provided witha slot 9, whereby the figures may be caused to swing and also move to and -fro,by gravity, on'a plane parallel with the top of the rocker when said rocker is operated and the slots 9, are at 'an angle to the plane of the horizontal base upon which the rocker is placed. In 6 of';thedrawings the imageH, has a rounded, or full-bodied trunk and length as to have the soles of their feet" normally contact with the platform, or top ofathe rocker, whereby said soles of thefee-t said slot, sa d -1mage having a weighted will tap on said platformto produce a l-ifelike dancing actlon when the rocker 1s 1n motion, the figure oscillated and swing ng motion is imparted to itsarms and legs.
1 In the simplest form of my inventionthe rocker may be open at the bottom; or a protectivebottom 12, maybe secured between theside walls G, as shown by Fig, 5. of the drawings. 7 I i V In the operation and use of the invention it is simply necessary for a user-to tap either end of; the platform D, with the finger tips. This impartsrocki-ng motion, tothe rocker causing the images to move upwardly and downwardly. and; also; swing oroscillate back and forthon their pivots by means of the weights J which; are caused to' oscillate by therocking motion imparted to the rocker, theimages continuing. theirzmovements upwardly and downwardlyf and to and fro, in a lifelike manner, as long as rocking motion is imparted tothe rocker, the, arms. and legs, when; pivoted, or jointed arms and legs are employed, also continuing to swing during the continuance of said rocking -IIlOtlOIl.
I do not confine myself to the specific details 015 mechanical construction and proc- GSSrOf manufacture as herein shown and described, asunder the spirit and scope of my invention I believe that I am entitled to em- 7 ploy variations of construction comprising mechanical and structural equivalents. for the several parts of the device.
While I have.- specificallydescribed my invention as related toimages ofanimate bodies figure representations of variousmoving things may also be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, instead of the images shown I- may substitute miniature airships or other devices adapted to, have movement imparted thereto. a i 1 Having thus described my invention, what, I claim as new, and desire to secure by: Letters Eatent, is
l. A toy, comprising a segmental rocker and a swinging imageof an animate body,
said image having a .pendulum-memberex tendedptheirefrom, said image in" pivotal relation with said rocker, wherebyzrocking motion. imparted to said rocker oscillates said. ,1mage-., e

In a toy, the combination. of a; rocker embodying two. side segments and a flat i' platform having a plurality ozf,slo.ts:,-the1.e through with a plurality of images, said images in pivotal relation with Said'rocker and eXtended through said; slots, and, each having a weighted extension, and means pivoting andhanging said images, said images adapted tobemoved upwardly and downwardly and oscillatedby means'of said rocker when rocking motion is parted thereto. a i" 6, In a toy, the combination of rocker embodying two side segmentsandwa ."fiat platform having a slot therethrough; with an image. having swinging arms, and legs,
and a weighted extension-{said extension 1 passing through said slot, said imagein pivotal relatlon with, said rocker, and means plvotmg sald mage, said nnage; adapted. to
be ,oscillatedgby means of said rocker when rocking motion is imparted thereto- 7. In a toy, the combination of arocker embodying two side segments and a na platformhaving a slot therethroughywith an image having jointed and swinging-arms and legs and a weighted extension, said extension passing through said slot, and hangers having slots parallel with thegplane of said-platform, and lateral pivots engaging said slots and supporting said images whereby, when rocking motion. is-imparted to said rocker, saidimage is caused to. move upwardly-and downwardly andto and fro and swinging-motion is imparted to its legs andarms. I
8. A toy comprising a' segmentalrocker, T1:
a pendulunrmember in pivotal relation with said rocker, and: a figure representation of a moving object, said object extend ed upwardly from said pendulum-member.
