F. l... LINDSTROM MECHANICAL TOY med June 9, 1925 mmvrox. ira/zk Z, Lindsbvm/ Patented Dec. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' FBANKIJ. mnns'rnoivr, or BRIDGEPORT, oonnnorron'r, ASSIGNOR TO THE LINDSTROM TOOL & TOY COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A'CORPORATION OF CON- nncmicur.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Application filed June 9, 1925. Serial No. 35,836.
- The present invention relates to an improved mechanical toy, and more articularly a dancing figure toy in the orm of a doll, animal, or the like, an object being toprovide such a device adapted to stand up rightly and operated in a mannerto be vibrated or jiggered in simulation of a shimmy dance. 1
Another object is to provide such a device of extremely simple construction, and preferably formed of sheet metal, as tin, pressed to shape, the devicefaccording to its present embodiment consisting of four pressed metal pieces, a front and back and two feet members, and which are secured together by integral clamping lugs.
A further object is to providea device in which the motoris secured to one of the metal pieces only, and in which the set of the figure is such as to balance the motor during its vibratory operation in a mannerto maintain the figure in standing position.
A still further object is to providea type of figure adapted for direct ornamentation,
as by painting, but which may, if desired,
. be provided with afabric dress and. an
attached face portion of celluloid or other suitable material. i
-With the above and otherfobjects in view, embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, and these embodiments will be hereinafter more fully described, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a mechanical doll, according to one embodiment of the invention, having a fabric dress;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of an embodiment, without the fabric dress, and showing the upper portion in side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a detail View of the vibratory motor employed;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the foot portions detached;
Fig. 5 is a front view of the leg end of the figure, without the foot attached; and
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, along the line 66 of Fig. 2.
7 Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 2 thereof, the device, according to the embodiment shown therein,
are slightly offset" from the outer upon the front near the heel with a. circular comprises front and back body portions 10 and 11 pressed to shape from sheet.tin,-or other suitable material, and havingtheir meeting edges in a flat plane inclined slightlyforward in the standing position of the figure, as shown. At suitable points along these meeting edges there are provided integral projecting lugs 12, 13 andl, two of these being onone edge in spaced relation, and the other being on the other edge and disposed between the first two. These lugs the body portions, as shown in Fig.6, and by pressing the same down upon the outer surface of the opposed portions theisame are rigidly clamped together. i
Thelower endsof the body portions terinmate in bifurcated leg portions 15 and 16,
surface of annular-1y beadedas at 17, and provided and backedges with down- Wardly' projecting pairs of spaced lugs 18 and 19. .The two foot portions 20 are pressed from vsheet tin, or other suitable material, and are each provided with, a flat outwardly projecting marginal flange 21 adapted ,to engage flatly upon-the supporting surface upon which the figure is stood, thelength of the. feet and their spacing being such that the figure is firmly supported against falling; Each foot is provided aperture 22 provided with diametrically opposed. lugs 23 and 24, and the same is assembled with the leg portion'by engaging the beaded edge 17 of the latter with the upper surface of the foot about the aperture 22, so that the lugs 18 and19 at the front and rear engage at each side of the lugs 23 and 24, the lugs of the leg portion being bent outwardly against the inner surface of the foot, while 11 and bent over to secure the motor unit upon the inner side of said portion. The motor is provided with a winding handle or key 28 extended through a hole 29 in the glortion 11 and adapted to be turned to wind t e spring 80, which through suitable gears 31, 32 and 33 rotates a. shaft 345 mounted in in the same direction as tation of said welght'whlle the motor 1s runthe motor frame and depending substantially vertically therefrom, the axis of this shaft being parallel to the tilt of the figure, and upon the end of said shaft there is secured an eccentric or unbalanced weight 35.
,It will be noted that the weight is below the center of gravity, which in combination with the forward tilting of the figure and the support of the motor upon the back body portion, tends to balance the figure, so that it is firmly supported on the feet, and even withexcessive vibration, and turningmovement, will not fall over.
In operation the rotation of the eccentricweight produces a vibratory or jiggering movement in the figure, which closely imitates a shimmy dance, the figure at the same time executing a pivoting or turning movement due to gyratory forces set up by the weighted motor shaft, this movement being the direction of roning fast and being in the opposite direction when the motor is running slow.
' As shown in Figure 1 the figure is provided with a'fabricdress 36 including a hood 37 in the opening of which a face portion 38 of celluloid or the like is secured by sewing, the head thus formed being supported by the head portion of the metal body. It is obvi one that the form of the device may be varied to represent numerous figures, as dancing dolls clowns, monkeys,
Y and the like.
I have illustrated and satisfactory embodiments of the invention, but it will be made thereln, wlthin the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
'holl'owed sheet metal gether with their edges in Teddy bears,
and'described preferred be obvious that changes may Having thus described my invention, what 'Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a toy of hollow figure including sheet metalffront and back portions having their meeting edges in a substantially flat plane, and securing means comprising a plurality of groups of the character described, a
three lugs, two. of sald lugs being formed integrally in spaced relation upon the edge of one portion and the other lug being formed integrally upon the edge of the other portion and disposed between said lugs, said lugs being clamped upon the opposed portions to secure them together, sheet metal feet portions, and cooperat ng lugs on sald frontand back portions and said feet portions adapted to secure the latter to the front and back portions, and a vibratory motor supported within said figure.
' 2. In a doll, a body formed of a pair of sections secured toabutting relation,
sheet metal feet sections, interlocking lugs carried by the sections and feet and bent FRANK L. LINDSTROM.
