Claims. (Cl. 124-4) This invention relates to a toy figure adapted to be manipulated for throwing a ball in a game.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy figure which is constructed and arranged to hold the ball between outstretched arms and which figure is adjustable for varying the trajectory or flight of the ball.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy figure composed of pivotally connected upper and lower body portions which are tensioned to dispose the upper portion in set angular relation with reference to the lower portion and in which the upper portion is provided with outstretched arms rigidly connected therewith together with means for trajecting the ball from between the arms.
The invention further resides in the provision of a lever pivotally connected with the upper body portion and which is adapted to be manually actuated for projecting the ball from between the outstretched arms.
The invention also comprehends the arrangement of parts by which the upper body portion may be adjustably set for varying the trajectory or flight of the ball.
Another object of the invention is the arrangement of the outstretched arms for picking up the ball.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
in the drawings:
Fig. l is a side view of a toy figure constructed in accordance with the invention and showing a ball adaptedv to be thrown or projected by the figure.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the figure moved to position for picking up the ball.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the toy figure showing the ball in position for throwing and the upper portion of the toy figure. disposed in an adjusted set relation.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the figure shown partially in section.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the figure.
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken approximately on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken approximately on line 7--7 of Fig. 4.
The toy figure may be of any desired character adapted to be disposed in upright relation and having arms rigidly affixed thereto for holding the ball therebetween. As illustrated, the figure includes an upper body portion 19 and a lower body portion 11 which are pivotally connected together for swinging movement of the upper body portion 18 on a transverse axis from a substantially horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawingsfor picking up a ball B to various angular positions with reference to the lower portion as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings for projecting the ball.
The upper portion includes outstretched arms 12 extend ng forwardly thereof and with hands 13 arranged ice in open relation for receiving the ball therebetween. The upper and lower body portions have interfitting tongue and recess 14 and 15. The tongue 14 .is apertured to receive a shaft 16 fixed to the lower body portion and extending transversely through the recess 15 and which forms the axis on which the upper body portion is swingable. The upper body portion 10 is adapted to be set in any desired angular position for picking up and projecting the ball and is frictionally retained in set position by means of a spring 18.
In order to project the ball from between the outstretched arms, a lever 19 is provided having an apertured hub portion 20 and forwardly and rearwardly projecting lever arms 21 and 22. The hub portion 20 is swingably mounted on a shaft 23 extending transversely of the upper body portion at the juncture of the arms therewith. The upper body portion is formed with front and rear slots 25 and 26 through which the lever arms 21 and 22 project for vertical swinging movement. It will be understood that when the forwardly projecting lever arm 21 is disposed beneath the ball held between the arms 12 and the rearwardly projecting lever arm 22 is manually actuated to rapidly swing the same downwardly, the forwardly projecting lever arm 21 will traject the ball from between the arms 12 simulating the act of throwing the ball.
The lower body portion 11 includes rigid legs 27 which are afixed to a flat base 28 for supporting the figure in upright relation or with the upper body portion.
disposed in various angular relations.
For convenience in manufacture the upper body portion 10 is composed of two mating sections 30 and'31, each section including substantially half of the said body portion. The sections 3% and 31 are secured together by means of a pin 32 snugly fitting a bore 33 extending transversely through the shaft 23 and into the opposite sections 30 and 31. It is to be understood that the shaft 23 is formed of two parts, one part each being aifixed to each of the sections 3% and 31 and when the said sections are disposed in mating abutting relation, the two parts of the shaft abut and are securely. held together by means of the pin 32. The tongue 14 is also formed of two parts, one part being fixed to each of the sections 30 and 31.
The lower body portion 11 is similarly formed of two mating sections 35 and 36, each section including substantially half of the said body portion. Each of the sections is cut away to form one half of the recess 15 and one half of the shaft 16. The said parts are secured together by means of a pin 37 snugly fitting a bore 38 extending transversely through the shaft 16 with the ends of the pin extending into the opposite sections 35 and 36. The body portion 36 is also provided with a lug 39 which snugly fits a recess 40 in the opposite body portion 35. The upper sections 30 and 31 are formed with arecess 41 above the tongue 14 in which is disposed the coiled expansion spring 18 which biases the mating sections 3% and 31 outwardly so as to impinge the two parts of the tongue 14 against the side faces of the recess 15 to thereby tension the upper body portion 10 and retain the same in any desired set position with reference to the lower body portion 11.
While the preferred form of the invention is shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications of the invention which fall within the purview thereof.
