CENTRIFUL PUMP.
Application nled october El, 195ML. eriai l'o. M'm'i..
To aZZwhom imag x20/wem:
Be it known that We, JOHN J. SCHMIDT and ALBERT L. Enron, citizens of the United Stxites, residing at Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented certain nev1 and useful Improve ments in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following ,is a specification.
Our invention relates broadly to centrifu gel 'pumps und more particularly ton system for ,insuring e tight seal between high and low pressure areas in the pump systemA for increasing the eiiiciencyithereof.
One of the objects of our invention is to` provide e removable and. ndjnstebie sealing or Wearing ring structure for the impeiier of e centrifugal pnnp whereby the impeiler may be at ali times properly loceed in re lation to the ring structure by jnstmen of the sealing' or Wearing ring strnctmff..
Another ob'ect of our' invention is to prt vide e pair o sealing and Wearing on opposite sides of nn impeiler in e rotery pump structure for compensating for ond minimizing siip pest the rings of the iinpeller within the pump structure.
Still another object or" our invention is to provide a structure ot" adjustable sealing und Wearing ring` for centrifugal pumpn4 having s Wearing fece adopted to register with zt corresponding cooperating annular face 'or faces on en impeller with Ineens for adjusting the 'sealing or Wearing ring to :my desired position.
A further object of our invention is to provide n pair of sealing and Wearing rings on opposite sides of en' impeller in .e centrifugal ump where the lmpeller is pio vided with annuler feces having spiral grooves therein directed toward the. axis 'of the pump in the direction of rotation thereof forming e Seel between, the ilnpeller und the sceiing and wearing ring structure und preventing iindesircd leakage from high pressure arcas to low pressure areas und thereby increasing the efiiciency of the pump system.
Om' invention will he more clearly nndcrstood from the specification hereinafter foi-- lowing by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Y
Figure l is e partici crosserctionnl view through the pump structure showing the op*y Iscrew tilrends in the ring memhcrs .ing rings binding against 'the ecesoi' tno ings, the pump is shown mounted upon base 1 having e pump casing 2. The central ontl lot for the pump is ri resented :it 8. The inlet porte :ire represe, ted :it 4 and ii de vlirering finid. to opposite sides of the irn-y peller l2. ",ihe impeilor is carried by e. siret S which passes ihren-rh aching icones ti and.: 1' and is jonrneiedin )earrings 9 and i0. i"``r.\rw`er is delivered by rotary shaft?) through conplinf H. for any desired innpose. in euch siii it he pomp casing 2, we provide nnnnier ring members lei und i5 on oppo-v o .vides ot the iinpeiier '12.
is internniiy screwihrended to rewere. sanding-anti wearing rings 'i8 and 19. The scanne' und. Wearing rings i8 and i9 may ho adjusted e'xiaiiy tower-d or nwey from nnen '16 anni 1( of' the impe-lier i2.. The screw-throws in one of the ring members nre iorined opposite to t ie screwtiircsds in the other ringr nien'aher, enztbiing the :Boah ing?` and wearing rings iii and Mito he readily adjusted into position Where they regi.' with the minninr ineen '1G and i? ,of *L pellcr '12. The opnosed releticn of iin the Ninil notes the possibility of the' sealing or w iinpeiier during operetion in the event ti-int the wearing; und sealing rings become loosev in the ring members. That is to say, the soniing; rings are screfv threaded into the ring members in Singh direction that the rom tation of the impoiier is in such rein ive die rection with respect to the screw threading oi the wearing rings that woning ringe tend to tighten in the ring;` members rather than lo veen. The errnngeinent is portion hirly infective in inmensa-ng; the life of the pnmpnnd oti'ers ,hstent-ini protection to the ixnpoiier. Rin member it ie royA vided with an nmzniiir weil .2f-i and e inngo :tace 2i', in which the set screws 2O are positioned7 enabling the sealing and wearing ring 1S to be held in position when it has been finally located in a desired position with, respect 'to tace 16 of the impeller 12. The ring member .is provided with an annular wall Q5 and a 'face Q3 in which the set screws 21 arc positioned7 enabling the sealing or Wearing ring 19 to be held in position when it has been located in a selected position with respect. to the face 1'4" ot the impeller 1). rhe arrangement of parts is more clearly illustrated in lFig. 2. The sealing or wearing,` ring 1 8 may be provided with a pocket or pluralityA of notches 29 to facilitate the adjustment of the sealing and Wear ing ring in position by means oi' a. Spanner' Wrench when the set screws 20 are. loosened and when it ,is desired to change the position of the sealing and wearing ring with respect to the annular lace 1G of the impeller 12. ritter the desired adjustment is made to secure the proper clearance between the annular tace ot the sealing and Wearing ring 1S. and the annular .face 16 of impeller 12, the scrci's 2O are. tightened, securing the sealing and Wearing ring in a pern'ianent position. The sealingr and Wearing ring' 18 may be provided with an extended lip 26, vwhich extends under the annular Wall of the impeller 12 to insure a seal between the high and low pressure arcas in the pump. 1n order to further insure against the leakage of water pastthe sealing and Wearing rings we provide spiral groove 27 in each of `the annular faces 16 and 17 of the impellcr 12. The spiral groove 2'? is directed in the same direction 'as that in -which 'the vanes oi the impeller 1:2 are directed and is directed toward' the axis ol' the pump in the direction ot rotation thcreoi.
ln this way any leakage which might, normally tend to occur forced back into the 'rh pressni nga e area il tous i'ctlucing the short circuit leakage and consequently increasing the etlieicncy ol' the pump.
Alt will be understood that the sealing and wearing ring itl may he constriu'tcd in a .farietj,v ot forms and that thc face thcrcot may have any desired formation with which to cooperate with a corresporiding,T i'acc on the inipcller. The sealing and wearing; ring may be removed 1from time to time as it hef comes Worn. It will he: also understood that various ineens for securing the scaling and wearing ring; in position maybe i-rovidcd and that the :u 'rangcmcnt shown in thc drawi. f. is given merely torv illustrativi-y hurposcs. 'l`hc clearance between the inipcller 'incas and the nearingl ring laces is substantialif,v vertical enabling an easy all justine-nt ot lusi-aliofr and ruai'inff rinus. '.llhc entire rotor he shifted by adjuft nient of sealing and. wearing rings 1H and 19. The clearances between wearing i'aifcs 16 and '17 on opposite sides of impeller 12 and sealing and Wearing rings 18 and 19 are not necessarily equal. The sealing rings are each independently adjustable, that is to say, the screws 2() may be loosened and the rings advanced or retracted in the screw threaded ring members 1L and 15 by use of a Spanner wrench fitting into the notches represented at 29. The fact that the sealing; and wearing rings are readilyl removable. gives increased life to the pump at the same time maintaining the original clearances and eliiciency of the pump by slight adjustment of the sealing and Wearing rings from time toi time to take up the wear.
As We have previously pointed out the arrangement of the sealing and Wearing rings in combination with the impeller and the pump casing serves to minimize sli past the rings and the inipeller within tie pump structure, that is to say, the pressure developed is cll'ectirely utilized as head with minimun'i losses.
While we hare described our invention in rcrtin particular embodiments, we desire it ui'iderstocfi that, modifications may be made and that iiniitations vupon the invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claims.
