IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,422, dated August 25, 1874; application filed July 25,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT K. SMITH, of Nebraska, in the county of Pickaway and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a device designed to take the place of the ordinary rein-ring now in use on harness-hames and consists of a frame containing two pieces of metal or other suitable material, preferably rollers, held against each other by spring-pressure, the whole .bein g constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective'view, showing the hame to which the holder is attached in dotted lines, with theholder attached thereto, with the line between the rollers according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the rollerframe, showing the roller and spring in place.

A represents the hame. B is the rein supporter-frame, which may be fastened to the hame by screws or rive ts, or by a staple, a, and hook I). This frame is of box form, havingends projecting from the sides to secure M the pin or screw D, which passes through the outer roller 0, as seen in Fig. 2. E is a simple cylinder-roller placed partly within the box portion of the frame. Entirely within the box and concealed from view is a spring, F, which constantly presses roller E against'the outer roller 0.
The reins as they extend from the bridlebits of thQwl'lOISG are passed between these rollers G and E, which are intended to be held together by a pressure but little more than suflicient to preventthe slipping of the reins from their own weight.
The objects of the invention are to prevent the twisting of the reins and their falling underneath the 'animals fet-inconveniences which commonly attend the use of the ordinary ring. As already premised, the parts pressed together by thespring may be of a semi-cylindrical form without revolving, though I prefer rollers. This holder may be ALBERT K. SMITH.
