To @ZZ 1li/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH SoioRTINo, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nutcrackers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nutcrackers,- the object being to provide a manually operated inexpensive and eilicient device of the character suggested. j
The invention consists in the novel formation and combination of its various coniponent parts, as described, illustrated and claimed.
VIn the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my device; Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing the device in solid lines in open position for the reception of a larger sized nut, and in dotted lines in a closed position after operation; Figure 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the device in the same positions as Figure 2, except that it is adjusted to a smaller sized nut; Figure l is a horizontal transverse section on lines 4 4 Figure 2; and Figure 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 55 Figure 2. u
B represents the base, carrying adjacent its opposite ends the solid lug l and the forked or bifurcated lug 2. Loosely mounted between the forks of the lug 2 is the lever 3 of bell-crank formation, the longer arml 4 of which constitutes the operating handle, while the shorter arm 5 is loosely connected with one end of link 6.
Swingingly mounted upon lug l is the clamping bar or arm 7, the opposite end of which is loosely connected with one end of link 6, the opposite end of which link,
as already stated, is connected with the short arm 5 of the lever 3.
l Swingingly mounted upon the base B is the trough like plate S designed to hold the nut in position while being operated upon, and adapted to be moved laterally, as indicated in dotted lines, Figure 4.
As hereinbefore suggested, my device is adjustable to larger and smaller sized nuts, and it is obvious that this purpose may be readily accomplished by directing the counecting link 6 upwardly from the lever arm 5, as shown in Figure 2, for larger lsized nuts, and downwardly, as shown in Figure 3, for smaller sized nuts.
The operation of my dev-iceis asv'follows: After adjusting the device to the size nut to be operated upon, the handle is forced outwardly, which carries the clamping bar 7 upwardly away from the base, as shown in solid lines, and after the nut is placed' in position, the handle is pushed inwardly, forcing the clamping bar downwardly toward the base, as shown in dottedy lines, thereby pressing the shell of the nut.
I claim:
l. In a device of the character described, in combination with a base, a clamping bar swingingly connected at one end with one end of said base and having its opposite end loosely connected with one end of a link, andan operating lever of substantially bell crank formation loosely mounted upon the opposite end of said base, and having one of its arms loosely connected with the opposite end of said link in such manner as to permit the swinging end of said clamping bar to be disposed either above or below the arm of said operating lever, in order to adjust the device to the accommodation of different sized nuts.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination with a base, carrying a pair of oppositely disposed upstanding lugs, a clamping bar, having one end swingingly mounted upon one of said lugs, and its opposite end loosely connected with one end of a link, and an operating lever of substantially bell crank formation loosely mounted upon the other lug, and having one arm thereof loosely connected with the 0pposite end of said link in such manner as to permit the swinging end of said clamping bar to be disposed either above or below the arm of said operating lever, in order to adjust the device to the accommodation of different sized nuts.
BQIn a deviceof the character described, in combination with a base, a clamping bar swingingly connected at one end with one end of said base, and having its opposite end loosely connected with one end of a link, an operating lever, of substantially bell-crank formation,`loosely mounted upon the opposite end of said base and having one of its arms loosely connected with the opposite end of said link, and a holding` member loosely mounted upon said base and adapted to swing laterally.
Ll. In a device of the character described, in combination with a base carrying a pair of oppositely disposed upstanding lugs, a clamping bar having. one end swingingly mounted upon one ofv said lugs and its opV posite end loosely connected. with a link, an operating lever7 of substantially bellcrank formation, loosely'mounted upon the other lug and having one arm thereof loosen ly connected with the opposite end of said linkT and a holding member loosely mounted uponrsad base and adapted to swingA lat- 10 erally.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature n the .presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH SCIORTINO.
Witnesses ALICE MCGINN, vLEILA C. AUGUSTINE.
