MILK CAN OPENER Filed Oct 12, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 3 [nvenlor "m" I Pli'hrd je km ve A 110 may Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MILK CAN OPENER Richard De Trempe, Kenney, Ill. Application October 12, 1935, Serial No. 44,779 4 Claims. (01. 164-11 9) This invention relates to a. device for punching holes in milk cans and the like so that the contents can be poured therefrom, the general object of the invention being to provide a clamp for encircling the can, lever means carried by the clamp and punch means for punching two holes in the can topwhen the lever means are actuating.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing the invention attached to a can.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side view of the clamping member showing the lever in open position.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the clamping member in open position and with parts in section.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a view of the short lever which carries one of the punchers.
Figure 8 is a view of the link which connects this lever with the main lever.
In these drawings the numeral l designates a spring metal strap which has a hinged leaf 2 fastened to one end thereof which receives the hinge pin 3 which hinges theclamping lever 4 to said end of the strap I. This lever 4 has its upper and lower edges bent to provide the flanges I which are slotted as shown at 8 through which pass the bent ends 9 of the extremities of the limbs of a yoke ll] of flexible wire or the like. The yoke has its limbs through holes in the bent part II of a plate 12 fastened to the other end of the band or strip I. When the clamp is to engage large cans the bight of the yoke engages the part II but when used on small cans the bight of the yoke is placed over the book [2' which makes the clamping device of smaller diameter. A sleeve 13 is placed between the flanges 1 and receives the bent ends 9 and a pair of springs I4 are connected with the ends 9 at the ends of the sleeve and the other ends are connected to the lever 4 as shown at I5. Thus when the band or strip l and the yoke ID are in open position as shown in Figure l and placed around a can such as shown at A in Figure 1 it is simply necessary to swing the lever 4 to the left in Figure 4 and this action of the lever will contract the parts I 5 and E El around the can and thus firmly attach the parts to the can. As will be seen the springs M will exert a pull upon the extremities of the limbs of the yoke l 0 so as to yieldingly hold the member around the can which arrangement also provides means whereby the device can be placed around cans of different sizes.
A casing B has a depending part IE on its bottom l8 which is riveted to a part of the strip l as shown in Figure 4 and said casing includes the 15 sides [9 which project beyond the depending part It. A main lever has a substantially inverted V-shaped end portion 2| the extremity of which is hinged to the outer ends of the sides I9 as shown at 22 and said lever is formed with a sub- 2 stantially straight intermediate portion 23 having an elongated longitudinally extending slot 24 therein, the rest of the lever being slightly offset upwardly as shown at 25 to provide a handle portion. A punch 26 has a threaded stem 28 25 passing through the slot with the punch held in adjusted position by the nut 29. A short lever 30 is pivoted at the inner end of the casing B as shown at 3| and this lever carries the second punch 32 which is held in place by a nut 33 and. 30
the bottom I 8 of the casing is provided with an opening through which the punch 32 passes. The free end of the lever 30 is bent upon itself to provide an eye and the stem of the punch 32 and the nut 33 holds the bent part in place and a link 34 pivotally connects the free end of the lever 30 with the ear 35 depending from the part 2| of the main lever 20.
Thus it will be seen that the device can be firmly attached to the upper portion of a can and then by swinging the lever 20 downwardly the link 34 will swing the lever 30 downwardly so that the punch 32 will punch a hole in the top of the can and then upon continued downward movement of the lever 20 the punch 26 will punch another hole in the can top so that the top will be provided with a pouring hole and a hole for admitting air into the can.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided 5 that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
l. A device of the class described comprising a lever, means for detachably connecting the lever with a can, a punch carried by one part of the lever, a second lever, a punch carried thereby and means for first causing the second punch to punch a hole in the can top when the first lever is swung downwardly and then to cause the first punch to punch a hole in the can top.
2. A device of the class described comprising a clamp band for encircling a can, a lever, means for pivotally connecting one end of the lever to a part carried by the band, a punch carried by a part of the lever, a second lever pivotally supported from a part of the band, a second punch carried thereby, a link connecting the second lever with a part of the first lever whereby downward movement of the first lever will cause the punch of the second lever to first punch a hole in the can top and then the punch of the first lever will punch a hole in the can top.
3. A device of the class described comprising a clamping band, a lever moving the band in clamping and unclamping position, a casing having a depending part connected with a portion of the band, a main lever pivoted to a part of the casing, a short lever pivoted in the casing, a link connecting the short lever with the main lever at a point close to the pivotal point of the main lever, a punch carried by the short lever, a punch adjustably carried by the main lever.
4. A can punching device comprising a clamping band, means for adjusting the length of the band, a lever for adjusting the band in clamping and unclamping position, a main lever pivotally connected with a part of the band, a pair of punches and means operated by the main lever for causing said punches to penetrate the top of the can which is encircled by the clamping 2 band.
