Be it known that I, Feen l-l. Meermin, a citizen or" the United States, residing at Spokane, in Spokane County and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in cuit' buttons ot the link type. The primary object ot the invention is the pro vision ot a device ot this character having an elastic connection between the buttonlieads to insure convenience and facility in slipping the buttoned culi over the hand. By the utilization ot my improved cuitl button the cuits, when buttoned, although smaller than the hand, may yet be slipped p over the hand without danger of straining, tearing, or marring the shape ot the laundered cuits. rihus when putting on a shirt with attached cutis on its sleeves, the wearer may button thel cutis before putting on the shirt with the knowledge that the cutis will slip over the hands without annoyance usually accompanying such a performance under ordinary conditions, and especially where the style requires the use of cutis conforming to the size ot' the wrist rather than to the size of the hand.

The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arangements involving the use of an elastic shank and links making a'tlexible connection between the heads ot the button, with means :t'or limiting the separating movement of the heads, as will be hereinafter more fully set i'orth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two :torms of the physical embodiment ot my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accordance with the principles ot my invention.

ln carrying out my invention I utilize an elastic shank or coupling bar, which as shown in Figures l and 3 is a tubular membei' l having perforated ends 2. The hollow 14, i925., sarna No. asis.

shank is made ot rubber or other yelastic material fashioned in suitable manner to the proper size and preferably cylindrical in shape with the thickness of the perforated ends increased to reinforce or strengthen the shank to withstand wear. The shank occupies the space between the cuit-ends and is designed to permit longitudinal extension when the cuit is being slipped over the hand, and to return and retain the cuit ends to proper position after the cuil' is in position about the wrist.

At each end ot' the shank is carried a dumb-bell link 3, these links being similar in construction and movable with the respective ends ot' the shank when it is eX- tended. Excessive movement or separation ot the links however is prevented by the use ot a non-elastic tie or cord 4 located within the hollow shank and attached in suitable manner to the two inner heads or halls 5 of the dumb-bell links. This tie or cord is longer than the normal length ot the shank, or rather longer than the normal distance between the two balls 5 of the links, and of the required length to prevent stretching ot the shank beyond the prescribed limits.

llhen the buttoned cuit' is slipped over the hand the shank is stretched to permit such movement, but the tie cord, which permits ample stretching movement, also prevents excessive stretching movement, and after the cuit has passed over the hand the elasticity of the shank pulls the cutt ends to proper position.

At the outer ends ot the respective links are carried heads indicated as a whole by the numerals (i and 7. Each head comprises an inner circular disk S ot suitable metal or other material and provided with a central perforated socket 9 for the reception or" the outerhead ot thel dumbbell link and it. will be apparent that this ball and socket joint provides for the necessary 'freedom ot movement between the shank and heads.

An outer plate l0 forms part ot the button head and this plate may be ornamented as desired. The outer plate is larger than the inner disk and the former has an annular flange 1l fitting over the periphery or edge ot the disk to insure a neat finish ttor the button-head. These ornamental plates are interchangeable and are detachn able from the disks in order that they may be changed to conform to fashion requirements. y

A detachable fastening means between the plate and disk may be made up ofv a pair of headed pins 12 projecting laterally from the inner face of the ornamental or outer plate and through the keyhole slots 13 in the disk. Inattaching the cuff-buttons to the cuffs, the heads of the buttonare of course passed through the respective button holes in the cuff ends, and that portion 20 of the shank of the dumbell link rests in the button hole.

Or the socket member 9 in some instances may rest in the button hole. In either case the buttons Will present an attractive and neat appearance acceptable to the Well groomed YVel/lel'.
