Appiieation inea Apn i7, i924. serial No. 707,174.
To all whom t may concern:
CII
Be it known that I, JESSE C. KITTERMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Corydom in the county of Harrison, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and. luseful'Improvements in Umbrella vCases;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in,y the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in umbrellas, and Vparticularly to .cases therefor.
Une object of the invention is toprovide a case for an umbrella which renders theV saine serviceable as a cane.
Another object is to provide adevice of this characterwherein thev case is adapted to be telescoped andl lsecured to the vstick of the umbrella to formthe handle of the um` brella.
Another object. is to provide a device of Vthis character wherein the umbrella serves as a brace to maintain the casing in extendedk position, and against collapsing, when the case is being used asa cane.
Other objects and advantages will be apl parent from the following description when taken in connection with'the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an when used as a cane, and with the umbrella therein.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cane, in the posit-ion of Figure 1, the umbrella being shown in elevation.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the umbrella with the cane collapsed and attached to the stick of the umbrella to form the handle thereof.
` Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional. View through the handle.
Referring particularly to `the accompanying drawing, 10 represents an umbrella which has the metal stick 11, vand the tip and ferrule 12 and 18 on the end thereof. Secured on the handle end of the stick 11 is a metal cup 14, the open end of which is directed away from the umbrella and is internally threaded.
The casing or cane portion of the devicek elevation of the casingv comprises a plurality of telescoped tapering tube sections 15, the smallest end section 15 being' provided, in its outer end, with a metalrtip'l. The other end section 152 is externally threaded at its opposite ends, as at 17 and 18, respectively. The umbrella is adapted to beinserted into -the ysections of the casing, as shown in Figure 2, the tip 12 entering the section 15 until the ferrule 13 rests against the inner endof said sec tion. The metal cup 14 passes wholly within thel largest end section 152,k andwhen the cap 19 is screwed onto the threaded endy 17, of said section, said cap will bear against the outer end of the cup, with the result that the portion of the umbrella beween the fer-rule 13 and the outer end of the. cap 19 effectively braces the telescopic sections to maintain them in proper extended position,
with the result that the casing, with the umbrella therein, serves as a cane without danger of accidentally collapsing.
When the umbrella is to be used, the cap 19 is unscrewed from the section v152, and the umbrella pulled from the casing.l The casing is i then collapsed and the -cup 14 screwed onto the smaller end of the section end of the stick of the umbrella and arranged to receive one end of said larger end section when the sections are telescoped, and
a cap arranged to be engaged on the other end of said larger end section when the sections are collapsed, at times, and when the sections are extended, at times.
2. A combined cane and umbrella 'casey comprising a casing composed of telescopic sections the large-r end one of which is externally threaded at both ends, an internally "threaded cup member v'fixed onthe handle end of the stickV of the umbrella and nrand for holding the sections teleseoped ranged t0 receive one end of said larger Within said Section, at times. 10 end section when said sections are teleseoped In testimony whereof, I affix my signa- Within said end section, and a cap remov ture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
ably engaged on the other end of Said end JESSE C. KITTERMAN. section for engagement with said Cup Inem- Witnesses: ,A i loer to retain the umbrella Within the casing' RUSSELL R. ROWE,
and to hold the easing' extended, at times, CONRAD LUTTICK.
