To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. Boss, a citizen of .the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county-of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in boilers and particularly improved arch constructions and has for its principal object an improved construction of this character which will be highly etiicient in use, the present invention constituting an improvement over my prior application filed on or about June Qt, 1921 for im provements in boilers and bearing Serial No. 480,009. i
A further contemplation of the invention is to construct a hollow arch support communicating with the water compartments of the boiler. Within the arch support I arrange horizontal baflle-plates to assure a rapid circulation of the water in said compartments, caused by convection currents, whereby it will take less time to heat the water and maintain the sides of the arch, which are in the direct path of the convection heat waves, at a temperature of slight variation, thus preserving the life of the material from'which the arch is formed as well as assuring rapid circulation and heating of the water.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

In attaining the objects of theinvention, the preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a boiler A having the usual fire box 10, combustion chamber 11 and crown sheet 12. The side walls and rear wall of the boiler are surrounded by water compartments 13, let and 15 in open communication with the main water compartment 16, as shown. This construction so far described does not constitute any part. of the invention, but is merely mentioned to more fully illustrate the same.
The crown sheet herein referred to and indicated by the reference character 12 is supported by a brick arch wall 17 which is in turn supported by my improved arch support 18, said arch support 18 being preferably in the form of a box-shaped structure rectangular in cross section and formed from a continuous sheet of material.
lVhen the arch support 18 is formed of a contimious sheet of material and bent substantially rectangular in shape the joining ends, indicated at 19, are secured together by welding or otherwise and the' walls of the arch support. are reinforced by transverse rivets or stay-bolts-2O equally spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 2. The arch support 18 is mounted in the combustion chamber of the boiler an applicable distance above the grates 21 thereof and the ends 22 project a trifle into the water compartments 13 and 14, as shown in Fig. 2, said ends being secured by welding or otherwise to the inner Walls 23 of the said water compartn'ients. While the drawings illustrate that my improved arch supports the arch wall 17, this need not be so 111 every case. here the arch support is merely employed to connect the opposite side water compartments of the boiler together at a location over the fire box the construction or rather formation of the arch support will not beso apt to warp or sag as would a cylindrical arch support, said warping or sagging being cansedby the intense heat which the support is subject to.
It will be seen by inspecting the drawings and referring tothe description so far set forth that the arch support being in communication with the water compartments 13 and 14, water will be constantly passing tlnrough the arch support and inasmuch as the support is directly over the fire box the water passing through the same will be more readily heated than the water in the water compartments 13, 14 and 15 and under such conditions the convection currents will create a rapid circulation therethrough.
My object is to increase this circulation and r verse bafile- plates 24 and 25 having their adjacent ends 26 in spaced relation with respect to each other and curved downwardly so as to embrace the adjacenterivet or bolt 20. In mounting the battle- plates 24 and 25 within the arch support 20 the said plates are supported by the transverse rivets 20 which are positioned midway between the top and bottom walls of the arch support.
It will be readily understoodthat .when the water in the lower portion of the arch supportis heated the heated water will rise to the top. to make room torthe cooler water and during this convection the currents will be caused to take a course indicated/by arrows in Fig. 2, this being accomplished through themediun'i of the bathe-plates 2i and 25. If at any time it is desired to clean the interior of the arch support or remove the baffle-plates 2iand v25, 1 provide ports or arm-holes 27 in the outer walls of the water compartments 13 and ll-Leach armhole being provided with scrcw-threaded plugs 28, which canbe readily removed at the desired time.
Some of theadvantages of the provision of the baille-plates, as disclosedhereim-have already been mentioned butto realize the importance and value of thebaiiie-piates the results accomplished must be fully taken into consideration and the chief results accon'iplished are, viz, the rapid heating of the water, the increased circulation of the convection currents which equally distributes the heated water through'the various water compartments and the amount of fuel saved owing to the rapid circulation of the convection currents.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eil ect, this is capable of variation and modification without department tromthe spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set torth but desire to avail myseli of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. Q
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
1. The combination, with the arch wall and the water compartment oi a boiler,.of a hollow arch support in open communication with said water compartment; means for re-intorcing the walls of said arch support; longitudinally extending bevelled plates removably mounted on said means-in said arch support intermediate the bottom two subscribing witnesses.
and top thereof and having their adjacent ends in spaced relation with respect to each other, said plates being adapted to direct convectingcurrents threugirsaid arch support; and means permitting withdrawal of the bevelled plates from within said arch support.
2. In a boiler, the combination with the arch wall and the water compartment thereof, of an archsupport formed from a Single sheet of material and formed rectangular in shape,.saiid arch support being'in communication with the water coinpartments ofsaid boiler,.the wails of saidarch support being. reinforced by. transverse st aybolts; and oppositely disposed plate members carried by saidstayL-boltsand having their adjacent end-sin spacedrelation with respectto .eachother, said plates adapted to-dine'ct convectingcurrents tl'irough said arch support.
