To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, JosnrH WARREN PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Boilers for Steam and Hot-Water Heating, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boilers for steam and hot water heating.
The object of said invention is to increase the heating surface of a boiler by the use of a water containing division, consisting of spaced water tubes extending across the tirechamber and from the top of said chamber, their lower ends being connected to a horizontal tube having closed ends, said horizontal tube being in proximity to the fuel supporting surface but far enough above to allow the lower part of the fuel to extend under said division; having a water connection only at the top thereof with the body of the boiler and not being connected with the return flow.
The division is held from displacement by its connection with the top of the firechamber and by any convenient means of securing its lower part from lateral displacement within said fire-chamber; preferably by recessing the walls of said chamber but without communication therewith.
This division separates the fire-chamber into two preferably equal parts, either or both of which may be used at a time according to the requirements of the season.
The water leg or body of the boiler is correspondingly partitioned 1n such a manner as to leave one of the returns n COIIlII11lI11C1 tion with one of the compartments of said water-leg and the other return in commun cation with the other compartment.
The boiler is more conveniently provided with two door openings on opposite sides of the division but a single door opening as usual may be used if wide enough to give ready access to both compartments of the fire-chamber.
By this form of division a considerable portion of the water is retained in circulation through said division and thereby continually subjected to the greatest heat of the fire and being segregated from the general system is always in even temperature with the burning fuel, thus causing no detriment to combustion to even the slowest fire.
