JOSEPH ll'. BACON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH II. BERRY, OF SAME PLACE.
SECTIONAL BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,861, dated January '7, 1896.
Application filed May 18, 1895 Serial No. 549,309. (No modeLl .To all whom it may concern.-
Iie it known that I, JOSEPH II. BACON, of Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sectional Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improvement in sectional boilers or water-heaters, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of a complete boiler. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of one section. Fig. 3 is a section on line 03:1, Fig. 5. Fig. i is a section on line y y, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a vertical central longitudinal section, and Fig. (i is a front elevation of the rear section.
My invention relates to that type of boilers or heaters which are made by assembling a series of cast sections, and providing the boilers thus made with a suitable front section having fire and ash-pit doors, and a cleaningdoor, if desired, and a closed rear section.
F represents one of the main sections, the lower part of which is formed with Cl0W1lwardly-projecting water-legs H H, provided at their lower ends with lugs J to support a grate K, and supported on sectional legs I, which form a base, each leg being fastened to the section which it supports in any convenient way, thus leaving a fire-chamber in each section.
Grate K may be supported on the base if desired.
Above the lire-chamber A the part B of the section corresponding to the crown-sheet of a boiler is made narrower than the side II of the section, except at its center G, where each section is enlarged, as shown in Fig. 4, to the width of the outer side H, so that when a number of these sections are assembled they will come in close contact at their outer edges and at the center of the crown-sheet, as clearly shown in Fi g.
e represents a vertical fine in the center of each section above the center G of the crownsheet, extending from above the crown-sheet to nearly the top of the section.
M M represent water-chambers which extend from the sides of the section to the center fine 6, and O 0 represent vertical pipes connecting water-chamber M with the crownsheet portion of the section.
D D represent vertical water-pipes connecting the water-chamber M with a waterchamber or, preferably having an inclined top, the apex of which is formed with an opening L.
The sides H extend above water-chamber m, and also connect with discharge-opening L.
8 represents draft-openings below waterchamber M. t represents draft-openings above water-chamber m, and E E represent draft-openings which lead to the back of the boiler and communicate with draft-openings cl d, formed on the rear section S, which leads into a pipe g, intended to be connected with a chimney.
P represents a header or manifold, con nected with the Water-opening L, in each section, as shown in Fig. 5, and from the header P distributing-pipes or leaders lead out to the points desired.
The rear section S consists of a hollow castboX, having a water-chamber f therein, connected at its top with header P, having in its side near the top draft-openings 6 d, which lead into a single box 01 on the rear of section S, on which is formed a pipe g.
The front section B consists of a casting which need not be hollow to contain Water, though it may be so made if desired, and which has formed in it at the upper part a cleaning-door 1), near its center a fire door c, and at its bottom an ashpit door h.
N represents a header on each side of the boiler, connected with. each. section F at the lower part of its water-leg, into which the return or drip pipes lead.
When a boiler made of a number of these sections secured together is filled with water, and a fire is built in the grate K, a very large surface is exposed to the radiant heat of the fire, including the inner sides of H. The crown-sheet B and a large part of the upper portion of the section up to water-chamber M are thinner than the full thickness of the section and also the water-box of the rear section S below the water-chamber M. The products of combustion from the fire pass up between the crown sheets B of the section,
except at the center G, thence pass through the draft-openings S between the pipes O to the center flue c, water-chamber M acting as abaffie-plate, and thence travel both ways through openings i between pipes D to the draft-openings E, thence back through the draft-openings d and out of pipes g. The heated water, or mingled water and steam, rises through water-legs ll, pipes O, water-chamber M, and pipes D, and flows out either in the shape of hot water or steam through discharge-openings L in the header P, for distribution in the ordinary manner."'
If used as a water-heater, of course the boiler and all pipes connected therewith will be full of water, while if used for steam the waterdevel will be preferably below the up per side of the water-chamber M, thus giving the Whole upper portion of the section as a separator, and permitting a downflow of water on the outside of each section, in addition to the return through header N.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A section fora sectional boiler made in one piece having divided Water legs, a crown sheet adjoining said Water legs, and narrower, except at its center, than the water legs, a vertical central flue having a crown sheet, a water chamber acting as a baffle plate on each side of said line, and of the full thickness of said section, a water chamber above said baffle plate and vertical pipes connecting the crown sheet portion with said baffle plate and other vertical pipes connecting said baffle plate with the top of the section, substantially as shown and described.
2. A section F, in a cast iron boiler, having the sides H, the crown sheet part B, made narrower than the sides except at its center G, a vertical central fine 6, a water chamber M on each side of said central flue of the "full thickness of the section, to act both as JOSEPH H. BACON.
