BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26,1921.
Application filed June 7, 1919. Serial No. 302,498.
T o a-ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT JOSEPH Norm, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful uImprovements in Boilers, of which the following 1s a specification.
the interiors of the headers.
My invention relates to improvements in boilers, with more particular reference to boilers used for heating purposes, and the object of my invention is to devise a boiler provided throughout with double return iiues whereby the heating surface is greatly increased over that obtained in boilers having single flues, thus enabling quicker action and increased economyof fuel to be obtained.
I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boiler, in part section.
F ig. 2 is a reduced front view of the Hue headers.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a pair of headers.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 and 2 indicate the front and rear headers superposed one above the other between which extend a plurality of large tubes 3 arranged in parallel rows and the interiors of which tubes are in communication with The upper rows of tubes are longer than the lower rows and their rear headers rest on the top edge of the rear wall l of the boiler setting and extend into the outlet flue 6, as shown. rlhe rear header of the lowest row of lower tubes rests on the bridge 7, while the front headers of all the rows rest on. the front wall 8 and in front of them is arranged a smokebox 9.
10 indicates small tubes extending through the larger tubes 3 and the headers 1 and 2, the interiors of which tubes communicate at their front ends with the smokebox 9 and at their rear ends, as to the upper rows extending through the long tubes 3, with the flue 6, and as to the lower rows extending through the short tubes 3, with the main space 12 inclosed within the walls of the setting the rear wall of which is spaced away from the rear headers of the short tubes to allow free passage of the hot gases through the same.
The interiors of the headers, which are supplied with water from a suitable source by any suitable means, are connected together by push nipples 13 so that the water may circulate freely through them, the water outlets and returnsbeing indicated by the numerals 14 and 15 respectively.
16 indicates the furnace arranged directly underneath the lower rows of tubes while 17 indicates the ashpit.
The operation of the boiler will be apparent as it will be seen that water circulated through the headers 1 and 2 and their connecting tubes 3 will be quickly heated by the hot gases from the furnace which pass not only upward all around the outside of the tubes 3 and the headers but are deflected downward to pass through the lower rows of small tubes 9 and thenpout through the upper rows, a large heating surface and double return action being thus obtained so that quick heating with great economy is secured.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a boiler, a setting forming an inclosure having a furnace, an outlet in its rear wall, and a smoke box casing on its front wall; a plurality of superposed connected front water chambers disposed adjacent said casing and inclosed thereby, a plurality of tubes extending rearwardly from the uppermost chambers in parallel rows and provided on their rear ends with water chambers similar to the front ones, the latter chambers extending into said outlet and the lowermost one being supported on the said rear wall, a plurality of shorter tubes extending rearwardly from the lowermost front water chambers provided. on their rear ends with similar chambers spaced from the rear wall of the setting, the lowermost one of which rests on the furnace bridge, and smaller tubes extending through the aforesaid tubes and chambers the interiors of the lower ones of which communicate with the inclosure and the smoke box and of the upper ones with the smoke box and the said outlet.
Dated at Victoria this 19th day of May,
ROBERT JOSEPH NOTT.
