. a citizen of the United States, residing at Minot, in the county of lVard and State of North Dakota, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Box Structures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a fire box construction, for use in various capacities.
An important object of the invention is to provide a fire box construction, having means whereby the coal or fuel is held against undue downward 'movement, avoiding packing against the lower grate bars, thereby effecting a superior draft.
A further object of lil1G l11V611tl0Il is to provide a fire box of the above mentioned character, having means whereby the packing of the coal is prevented, and also air circulated fines or grooves are provided, for allowing the fiame to come in contact with the walls of the fire box, and also providing proper draft. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,v and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a plan view of a fire box construction embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken, on line 33 of Figure 2.
In the drawings, wherein for thepurpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a fire box construction as a whole, shown as rectangular, for the purpose of illustration, although the same may be in any other suitable shape, such as polygonal or round. In the form shown, the fire box embodies sides 6 and ends 7. These sides and ends are hollow providing water jackets 9, in communication with each other. The water may be supplied to the acket through a pipe 10 and discharged therefrom through a pipe 11.
Each side and each end is provided with upper and lower sets of spacing ribs 12 and 13. The ribs in the set 12 are disposed alternately with respect to the ribs in the set 13, providing passages or grooves 12, be-

tween the ribs 12 and passages or grooves 13 bet-ween the ribs 13. At their lower ends, the ribs 12 terminate in points or shoulders 14, disposed adjacent to the upper ends of the grooves or passages 13. At their upper ends, the ribs 13 terminate in points or shoulders 15, adjacent the lower end of the The function of these spacing ribs, is to retain the coal or fuel spaced from the walls of the fire box, thus providing means whereby the flame may come in direct contact with these walls, and also providing passages for affording a proper draft. Particular attention is called to the fact that the walls of the sides and ends of the fire box are formed V- shaped, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and as a result of this, the upper ribs 12 are vertically inclined, converging downwardly, while the lower ribs 13 are vertically inclined, to diverge downwardly. The downward convergance of the upper ribs 12 serves to contract the mass of coal or fuel as it is fed into the fire box, and hence will serve to prevent crowding or packing of the coal upon the grate bars, to be described. This is an important feature of the invention. The shoulders or ends 14 and 15 of the ribs 12 and 13, are arranged at different elevations, producing a staggered effect. The ribs 12 project above the top of the fire b x, as shown.
The numeral 16 designates a transverse bar, formed at the bottom of the fire box and integral therewith. This bar supports grate bars 17, which maybe integral therewith, and with the ends of the fire box. The bars 17 are arranged in alternate sets, Figure 1, the bars in one set being disposed opposite -the openings between the bars in the other set. The bars 17 are preferably vertically inclined longitudinally, anid terminate at their inner ends in edges or shoulders 18. spaced as shown.
In the use of the fire box construction, the same may be mounted in the fire box of a boiler, locomotive boiler, or furnace or stove of any desired type, the same being constructed in a suitable shape and size to properly fit therein. The fuel is introduced into the top of the fire box structure and hence gravitates therein. The downward converging of the ribs 12 prevents the packing of the coal upon the grate bars 17, while the two sets of ribs 12 and 13, arranged in the staggered order, provide means whereby the flame may directly contact with the walls of the structure and also provides suitable draft grooves or passages,' for the proper discharge of the gases.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted'to, without departing-from the spirit of my; invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimeis:
1. A fire box provided upon the inner face of its wall with upper and lower spaced sets of, spaemp; ribs, the upper set beingdisposed opposite the spaces between the lower-sets said: upper sets being inc-lined and converging downwardly.
2. A fire box provided upon the inner face of-its wall with upper and lowenspaced sets of inwardly projecting spacing ribs,v the upper set being: disposed opposite the spaces between the lower set, said upper set converging downwardly and the lower set diverging; downwardly; and grate bars near the bottom of the fire box.
