A. JAHN HOLDER FOR WRITING IMPLEMENTS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 51, 1923 Patented May 19, 1925.
' UNITED ALBERT JAHN, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
HOLDER FOR \UEITING IMPLEMENTS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed August 31, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT JAHN, a citizen of the German Realm, and a resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for lVriting Implements and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for pens, pencils and the like and of the kind having, at the point where it is gripped, a more or less triangular cross-section. Usually the surfaces are made concave so as to conform to the contours of the fingers and the thumb, and the holder is bent so as to conform with the contours of the hand between the thumb and the fore-finger.
According to the present invention the holder is provided with a straight shaft and a straight gripping portion having a fiat top surface for the accommodation of the fore-finger, and convex, downwardly converging surfaces for the accommodation of the thumb and the middle-finger, said gripping portion being disposed eccentrically 25 relative to the shaft of the holder, with the top surface extended towards the right so as to meet the middle finger surface at an acute angle.
This arrangement has the advantage that while the holder can be gripped with the thumb and fingers remaining in their nat ural position, yet allows a convenient rolling adjustment of the holder between the finger tips, so that the hand muscles will have free play and so that cramping will be prevented, weariness lessened, a correct hold of the holder proper and a steady guidance of the pen or other writing implement attained.
The gripping portion of the holder may be made separately and adapted for de tachment from the shaft as well as from the writing implement.
Fig. 1 of the drawings represents a plan of a pen holder according to the invention,
Fig. 2 a side view of the same seen from the left of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 a side view seen from the right of Fig. 1.
Figs. 4c, 5 and 6 are corresponding views of a slightly modified pencil holder.
Fig. 7 is a plan showing the gripping Serial No. 660,360.
portion of a holder to which the shaft and the Writing implement can be detachably connected, and
Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of Fig. 7.
The holder is formed with a straight shaft 6 and a gripping portion having an upper flat surface 5 against which the thumb is placed and two convex downwardly converging surfaces 41 and 0 for the middlefinger and the thumb respectively. This gripping portion is eccentric relative tothe shaft 6 of the holder, the surface 6 being extended towards the right so as to meet the surface a at an acute angle. There is a bore d in the end of the holder for the reception of the writing implement, for in stance a pen-nib is. The gripping surface a: 3nd 0 preferably converge towards this en The shaft e in Figs. 1 to 3 is fiat and somewhat sword-shaped the better to accommodate itself to the joint between the thumb and the hand. The shaft 6" in Fig. 4 to 6 is round. In these figures, moreover the holder is fitted with a pencil 7c. The gripping portion of the holder may be made separately, as shown in Fig. 7, and formed with a longitudinal, eccentric bore al in which to admit, at one end a pen-nib or the like and at the other end the shaft.
The implement may also be used as a holder for artists brushes or like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a pen or like holder the combination of a straight shaft with a gripping portion having a flat top surface and two downwardly converging, convex side surfaces, the gripping portion being disposed eccentrically relative to the shaft of the holder with the top surface extended towards the right so as to meet the adjoining convex surface at an acute angle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pen. or like holder, the combination of a straight shaft with a gripping portion having a flat top surface and two downwardly converging, convex side surfaces, the gripping portion being disposed eccentrically relative to the shaft of the holder With the top surface extended towards the right so as to meet the adjoining convex surface at an acute angle, said gripping portion being made separately and detachably connected to the shaft of the holder as Well as to the Writing implement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afilx my signature 1n presence of two w1tnesses.
ALBERT J AHN.
Witnesses HY. S. ANsPAoH, E. WHIPPEL.
