PEN OR PENCIL 'HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,525, dated July 17, 1883.

To all whom it may concern,

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM: LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of Oalifornia, have made and invented a certain new and useful Pen or Pencil Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class or construction of holder which consists of a thimble or socket to be worn over the end of the forefinger; and my improvement therein consists in making the holder of two tubular parts or sections to-slide upon each other, the outer tube forming a case for the inner one, and constituting a socket to cover and reach up over the first joint of the finger, and the inner tube holding the pen or pencil and capable of movement into and out from the outer tube. This construction, as hereinafter more fully described, produces a simple and serviceable holder ofthe kind which is capable of being closed up to protect the point of the pen or pencil. When extended it affords a novel and effective means of holding the marking-point securely, while leaving the hand free.

The following description fully explains the nature of my said improvement and the manner in whichl proceed to construct and apply the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings by figures and letters that is to say: I

E is a raised or struck-up portion of a the outer tube, in which the clamping part f of the inner section is received. This clamp is constructed to receive and hold either a pen or a pencil. The one construction (shown in Fig. 3) is employed whenthe holder is to receive a pen, and the other (represented in Fig. 4c) is designed to hold a pencil-point. Such an instrument can be readily carried on the finger by aworkman or salesman without interfering with the free use of the hand. It is also capable of being closed into small compass to protect the point or be carried in the pocket. The length of the socket aifords sufficient holdto the finger, and by extending up over the first joint maintains the required rigidness of the finger end to properly control and manipulate the marking-point. - In the use of ink the finger is covered and protected from soiling. The hand of the writer is also relieved of the cramped condi tion of the fingers and the work is rendered less tiresome.

As heretofore in use, finger-holders have Pencil-points made movable and set by means of a. slit and screw have been known.
