IMPROVEMENT IN TANKS FOR OIL, 8w.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,877, dated August 4, 1874 application filed August 15, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F. UORTEZ WILSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil Tanks and Reservoirs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oil tank or reservoir, showing the application of my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a top-plan view of the same.

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of oil tanks or reservoirs for storage purposes, and for the use of the retail trade.

Tanks of this class are generally constructed of large size, varying from sixty to five hundred gallons each, and are provided with a top of such form as shall contain a pump for raising and discharging the oil into a measure, a sink to support the measure and carry back the drippings or surplus oil into the tank, a suitable opening for filling the latter, and a cover for inclosing the Whole to conceal the pump and utensils. It has heretofore been customary to construct these tops in three general forms, to wit: First, a conical top, se-

cured firmly to the tanks, and provided upon the front with a sliding cover, by which access is had to the pump, sinks, 850.; secondly, to construct the top in the form of a segmental case, having a radius equal to that of the tank and hinged to the top of the latter, so as to be raised or swung up for access to the pump, sink, 850.; and, thirdly, to leave the tank entirely open at the top to receive a pan adapted to fit down in and close the mouth of the tank, the pan being provided with the usual hinged cover, sink, pump, &c. These several tops are objectionable upon large tanks, for the reason that, as the first is formed of equal diameter with the tank, its construction becomes too expensive, while the second and third forms, in addition to the cost of construction, are too clumsy and heavy to be'readily opened and closed.

My invention is designed to overcomethese objections; and to this end itconsists in constructing the top in conical form and of less diameter than the tank, as I will now proceed to describe.

A is the body of the tank, of the capacity of from sixty to five hundred gallons, and B is the conical top, provided with a sliding,

door, G, and inclosing the pump D and sink E, together with the supply-opening F, for the oil. Instead of constructing the top of equal diameter with the tank, I make it of less diameter, and attach it eccentrically to the top of the tank, as shown, either in a fixed position or in the form of a pan let into the top of the tank, so as to be removed when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A fixed or movable top for oil tanks or reservoirs, constructed in conical form, of less diameter than the body of the tank, and provided with a cover, sink, pump, and supplyopening, substantially as described, forthe purpose specified.
