- c. KOSHALKO AIR OPERATED TOY Filed A1191. 18, 922
Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- CHARLES KOSHALKO, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AIR-OPERATED TOY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knowxi that I, CHARLES KosmLKo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Air-Operated Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an air-operated toy which is an improvement on the toy set forth in my Patent-No. 1,251,673, dated January 1., 1918.
The present improvements provide a sim- I ple, inexpensive and durable air-propeller operated device of novel construction and operation adapted for attachment to a flag pole, cap of an automobile-radiator. or to any holder, embodying a mechanical movement for operating movable parts of a figure, the latter being shown as the simulation of an eagle having movable wings, preferably carrying flags, although it is to be understood that the representation of the figure may be varied as desired.
The present improvements provide mech-- anism which is simpler, more durable, and much less expensive than the operating mechanism of my Patent No. 1,251,673 and, in addition thereto, there is provided novel means for automatically applying a braking action when the air velocity becomes too great.
The embodiments of the invention set forth hereinafter are susceptible of modification and the disclosure is to be considered as illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope thereof.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front 'elevation.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified operating device.
The upright 1 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal which is shaped to represent any suitable figure. As shown, the figure is that of the body of an eagle which is provided with a vertical slot 2.
Pivoted at 3 to the body are the wings 4 which have slots 5.
Preferably. the wings 4 are provided with fabric flags 6, the pins or stafls 7 of which are frict-ionally held in struck-up loops 8 of the wings 4, said wings being of metal. By reason of this construction substitute flags can be employed whenever desirzrl.
Projecting from the body is a bracket 1 and in this bracket and the body there is journaled a shaft 11 carrying a propeller 12 and a pinion 13.
Suitably journaled at 14 to the body is a gear 15. A connecting link or member 16 which is pivoted to the gear at 17, has a pin 18 which extends through the slots 2 and 5 so that as the gear turns, when driven by the rotation of the. propeller, the wings 4 are raised and lowered, thus simulating the appearance of the flapping of wings and also causing the flags to be waved up and down. As the flags are fabric, they can also fly in the breeze, presenting an attractive and pleasing appearance to the eye.
The shaft 11 is inclined and adapted for a limited sliding movement. Mounted on the shaft 11 is a friction washer 19 which normally remains out of contact with the upright 1 due to the inclination of the shaft. When the wind pressure or velocity becomes too great, the shaft 11 slides and the collar 20 then forces the washer 19 against the upright 1. resulting in a braking action which slows down the number of revolutions of shaft 11 so that the device will neither become injured from too rapid operation nor operate so fast as to mar the pleasing appearance of the movement of the Wings and ass.
In Fig. 5 I have shown modified means for operating the wings comprising a pair of links 21, 22, both pivoted to the gear 15 at 23 and. respectivelv. pivoted to the wings at 24, 25. In this form, the pin- 18 and slots 2 and 5 are omitted.
I claim: a
'1. In an air-o erated toy, the combination with an upright having a slot, of a pair of rockable members pivoted to the upright and having slots, a wheel, a link pivoted to. and driven by the wheel having a pin. said pin operating in the slots of the rockable members and slot of the upright, and airoperated means for driving said wheel.
2. In an air-operated toy, the combination with a slidable shaft. and figure members operated by said shaft, of bodily shiftable air-operated means for turning said shaft which is adapted to cause the shaft to slide when the air pressure on said means becomes sutficient for that purpose, and a brake which is operated when saidshaft slides as aforesaid.
In an airsonerated toy, the combination with an inclined slidable shaft, and figure members-operated by said shaft, of bodily shiftable air-operated means for turning said shaft which also causes the shaft to slide when the air pressure on said means becomes sufiicient for that purpose, and a brake which is operated when said shaft slides, said shaft, due to its inclination, normall ture.
remaining in a position to prevent lace.
CHARLES KOSHALKO.
