by air currents.
Another object is to'provide mechanism which is simple in construction, will not readily get out of order, and which will operate freely.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds. .the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of theinvention.
In the accompanying drawings the pro-- ferrcd form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, certain of the parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the figure portion of the sign, the same being shown in normal position.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3+3 Figure 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a pedestal in which a stem 2 is mounted to rotate freely, this stem being connected to and extended downwardly from a frame 3.
Journaled within the frame is a shaft 4 provided at its front end with a wind wheel 5. Secured to this shaft is a gear 6 adapted to drive a larger gear 7 secured to another shaft 8 which is journaled in the frame 3 This latter shaft is provided, at its rear end with a cam 9 which can be in the form of an elongated curved arm, as shown or of any other suitable construction. A vane 10 is extended rearwardly from the frame 3 so as to keep the wheel 5 normally in the wind.
The rear portion of the frame 3' is formed with a slot 10' extending upwardly and slid- ,able within this slot is the foot 11 of a hanger 12. This hanger is slidable within an opening 13 formed in a platform 14 Serial No. $7,964.
which is secured on and adapted to rotate with frame 3.
Secured to and extending upwardly from the platform let are the frontleg portions 15 of a figure simulating an animal. In the present instance the figure represents: a donkey and includes a body portion 16 pivotally connected to and extending between the upper ends of the front leg portions 15, the pivotal connection being indicated at 17.
The hind legs 18 of the figure are pivotally connected. to and extend to opposite sides of the rearportion of the body- 15, these leg portions being secured to a pivot member 19 adapted-to rotate. A lever 20 is fixedly con nected to this pivot member and is adapted to swing between the sides of the body 15, there being a link 21 connecting the free end portion of this lever to the platform let as shown.
A strip 22simulating the tail of the animal is pivotally connected to the body portion at 23 and the forward end of this strip is connected by a link 24 to the lever 20. Said lever 20 is also connected by av link 25 to an arm 26 extending from the pivot mem her 27 of the cars 28 of the figure.
Under normal conditions the figure is positioned as shown inFigure 2 with all four of the legs in contact with the platform 14, the ears 28 inclined downwardly and forwardly, and the tail 22 also hanging downwardly. The vane 10 serves to hold the wheel 5 in position where it will be actuated at all times by air currents. As the wheel 5 rotates motion will be transmitted therefrom through shaft 4: and the gears 6 and '5 to the cam 9. Each time the cam 9 rotates it comes against the foot 11 and thrusts it upwardly. This will cause the hanger 12 to thrust upwardly against the body 16 and to cause the same to swing about its connection 17 with the front legs 15. As the link 21 is held to the platform 14: the lever 20 will be caused to swing downwardly relative to the body 16 and thus pull through the link 24 upon the front end of the tail portion 22. At the same time lever 20 will thrust through link 25 against the arm 26 and cause the cars 28 to be lifted as shown in Figure 1. As soon as the cam 9 passes from under the foot 11' of hanger 1.2 the parts will drop by gravity to their normal positions shown in Figure 2 until the cam is again brought into place.
The action of the jointed figure in ei1nulating' the movement of an animal will of course attract the attention of passer-e by so that the sign thus becomes of considerable value :15 an advertising medium.
