To a]! vii/20m it may concern. I p
Be it known that 1, Fem nism; fin-muss. a citizen oi. the United States 0 neri i. residing at New York city, county of New York, and State of Npw York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mechanical T oys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical toys and in particular to a type embodying .zuovable figures or cl'iaracters.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy in which a concealed figure or char: ter makes its appearance periodically and automatically luring the travel of the toy.
A further object is to provide a toy in which the forward character between the shafts shall have a life-like inoven'ient, and shall be operated from the concealed figure operating mechanism which may be a part of the vehicle propelling means. i
A still further object isto provide a vehicle toy having a novel shaped body such as an egg from which a chicken emerges at intervals, it being undo bed that the vehicle body may be shaped as desired and the figure used therewith to be suitable such, for instance as a jack-in-the-lwx.
A still further object is to provide a propolling mechanism which will Opfll'lllZt-B the cover in the body of the vehicle. the chararter in the body andthe forward character all in unison or proper sequence as desirral.
In the drawing wherein l have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure l is a top plan view partly in section, of my improved toy showing the in terior operating mechanism in the vehicle body,
Figure 2 is aview in side elevation, the body of the vehicle being shown in section taken on line 2-2 ofFig. 1 to illustrate the propelling mechanism, I
Figure 3 is a rear elevation in section of thevehicle body showing the arrangement of the mechanism, and
Figure 4- isa top planview of the toy on a reduced scale showing the lid or trapdoor arrangement in the top of the vehicle body.
In referring to the drawing, it is to be understood that the showing of an eggshaped vehiclebody with a chicken therein is for the purpose of illustrating only one of the ways in which my invention may be appli d, it being evident that any suitable .body.
shank. 28 of thechicken figure 2%. figure is supported on a swinging arm .30 ;wh1ch is pivotally attached to the bar Bl.
vehicle body and tigure'iui saine manner, without cc rl'ing from the spirit of my invention.
ln'the drawing indicates a rah"? l egg-shape, which for the pux ght be used in the upper half 6 and lower half i, aly joined 8. The lower half of the body is provided with an axle 9 which extends beyond the sides thereof and carries the ground engaging wheeis 10 which propel the vehicle through the medium of a suit-- able drivingniechanisin which consists of a driven disc 11 secured to axle-9 and having il a integrally formed thereon a pinion 12 which is engaged by an intermediate gear is of similar shape, the pinion 1.4 thereof ineshir witluand being driven by 'the driving ar 15 which is mounted on one end of the spring druin'shaft 1G. The gear .15 is of course engaged by one end of a coiled spiral spring 17 wound about a, drum race end of the driunopposite the gear 15 carrying a ratchet which is also secured to the drum shaft 16, thelatter beingextend d beyondthe body of the vehicle to form a winding key 20.
lVith the exception. of the axle t), the slnittn are all journalcd in side frames 31 and 22, which are soldered or otherwise secured in the lower half 7 oi? the vehicle )n the side frame 22 there is pivoted a suitable ratchet engaging pawl 23 adjacent the ratchet 19 so (hat the spring may be wound, in the usual manner. 7
The end of the spring i? is attached to the ratchet. The side'plate 253 carries a bracket 24', the; end of which is curved to provide abearingas at-2Z3 for the intermediate gear shaft26;the bracke t 'being pro vided vwith suitableop'posed openings 9/? through whlch s adapted to loosely pass the This held in, and extending between, the side plates 21 and QEZrthe arm 30 being provided With an elongated slot 32 in its rear portion through which passes the shank 28 of the figure 29 before referred to. This slot allows for a swin in movement of the arm.
position it in the center line of the vehicle body.
The axle 9 is offset atthe center of the vehicle body as at 33 and inthis portion is engaged by one end of a character rocking arm 34, the forward end of which ipi'votally engages a projection 35 in the bottom of the animal figure 36, in this instance'a rabbit, so that when the axle 9 revolves it will rock the figure on its pivot point formed by the engagement of the support inn; shafts S7 with the sides ofthe figure 36. l t will be particularly noted that the'pivot point of the shafts and figure is in line with the pivot point of the rock arm 34 and the figrre, and both are at the balancing center of the figure,'so that, in motion,'the rock arm 3% will impart a quick jumpy-like movement to the figure.
The driving gear 15 is provided on its inner face with a plurality of spaced cam pieces which successively engage durthe revolution of said gear, an extended portion 3:) formed on the si'vingin'g arm 30. The arm is so shaped that it will rest on the bracket 24 when its extended portion 39 is not in contact with one of the cam pieces 38, in which position the chicken figur'e'29 will. be in its lowermost position, it being understood that the figure moves down ward independently of the arm due to gravity. When the arm is raised by a cam piece 38 it raises the chicken-figure through a suitable opening 40 in the top of the upper half 6 of the vehicle body, the opening- 40 being closed by a trap-door or lid 4-1'which conforms to the shape of the vehicle body and is hinged thereto as at 42. This lid carries a projecting piece 4:3 which extends into the interior of the vehicle body and in position to be engaged by another ofiset portion 4st in the arm 30, so'th'at when'the arm is raised, the end thereof will raise the lid taster than the chicken figure is projected upwardly through-the opening40 in the vehicle body, so that the lid will open first and then the figure will appear, and when the cam piece 38 passes from'under the oilset 39 of the arm O'thefigure will disappear and the lid will close simultaneously.
It will be noted that the'cam pieces '38 are wave;like so that in riding under the oflset 39 they will impart a ump movement to arm 30 which will cause a like movement of the chicken figure whileit is in posit-ion in the opening 40 in the vehicle'bo'dy.
The vehicle body isprovided with a pilot wheel 45 at its forward end and whileillustrated as fixed the same waybe pivoted to cause the vehicle to travel in circles 'or in any desired direction.
It will be seen therefortlrat I have provided a novel toy embodyinga fanciful comvehicle which will; be self propelled.
