CALVIN C. MILLER, SUMMIT HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
application and m 6,
Be it known that I, CALVIN C. hIILLnn. a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Summit Hill in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and; useful Improvements in a Toy, of which the following is a specification. A
This invention relates to a toy for afi'ording amusement and pleasure to children during their leisure hours. H
The principal object of the invention resides in-the provision of a spring motor for rocking two figures upon a platform.
Another object of the invention is to produce a toy which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost and yet be durable and constructed so as to withstand the rough usages to which toys are wont to be put by children.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the rear portion of the frame broken away,
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken through the frame, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the frame showing the figures removed.
The preferred embodiment of my invention consists of the frame 1 having the top 2 from which is suspended the casing 8 for supporting the expansion coil spring 1. This spring 4: is mounted upon the shaft of the key 5 in the usual manner. I have also proved upon the shaft of the key 5 a relatively large gear wheel for meshing with the relatively small gear wheel 6 shown in Figure 2. Upon the shaft of the small gear wheel 6 there is provided a larger gear wheel 7 for meshing with thegear wheel 8. Upon the upper end of the shaft of the gear wheel 8 I have provided the disk 10 which is situated above the top 2 and upon the lower end of the shaft of the gear wheel 8 I have provided the crank wheel 9. Upon the crank wheel 9 there is provided the crank 11 to which is attached in any preferred manner the rod 12.
The top of the casing is provided with an opening 14 having the upstruck ears 15 adjacent each end thereof. These ears 15 are provided with registering apertures. A

spaced distance from the opening 14 I have provided the brackets 17 having the upright standards 18.
A chair 19 of any preferred construction is pivotally attached to the ears 15 by means of the pin 22. have provided the clown figure 20 having the arms 22. This figure 20 is fixedly attached to the chair in any suitable manner. Pivotally carried by the standards 18 is the donkey figure 2 1. The pin 25 passes through the apertures provided in the standards 18 and through the body of the donkey figure so that this figure 2 1 will normally take the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawing that is so that the front legs of the donkey will touch the top wall of the casing 1. Cords or reins 6 are provided for connecting the donkey figure to the clown figure. Depending from the chair 19 there is provided the arm 27 to which is attached the crank rod 12.
Thus when the spring 4: is wound it will actuate the crank wheel 9 thus reciprocating the rod 12 and'actuating the arm 27 so as to rock the chair 19 and the figure 20. When the figure 20 is rocked rearwardly it will pull the reins 26 thus pulling the donkey figure rearwardly. Because of the ofi-centering mounting of the donkey figure it will of course have the tendency to take the position in Figure .1 and thus when the figure 20 is rocked forwardly the donkey will rock forwardly. It will readily be seen that from this construction the movement of the donkey figure will not be regular with the clown figure thus accentuating the wwwtricity of a donkey and affording additional amusement to the children. In order that the child may regulate the speed of the toy Ihave provided the disk 10 above the top 2 so that he may place his fingers thereon and by friction slow down the speed of the spring motor and if he should so desire stop the motor altogether. Another function of this disk is to hold the spring from operating while the key 5 is being actuated.
It is preferable that the casing and frame and the two figures be formed from tin or other sheet metal stamped and bent to assume the proper shape but it is obvious that various elements could be formed of any suitable material such as being cut from wood or the like or it may be formed from cast metal or folded material. It will also be seen that numerous other changes in the Seated upon the chair 19 I' ation arrangement, and construction of parts may be made without departing from the scope of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fall. within the sco e of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure for Letters Patent is 1. In device of the class described the combination of a. frame, a motor carried by the frame, aprimary figure rockably mounted on said frame and actuated by the motor, a secondary figure rockably mounted off center on the frame so that it will be normally in a forward rocked 'position, and flexible means for connecting said primary figure to said secondary figure so that the former will pull the latter to a rearward position when the former is actuated by said motor.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination or frame, a motor carried by the frame, a primary figure rockably mounted on said frame and actuated by the motor, a secondary frame 'rockably mounted off center on the frame so that it will be normally in a forward rocked position, loosely mounted members pivoted to the end of the secondary figure'adjacent the primary figure and flexible means connecting the two figures so that the secondary figure will be rocked upon actuation of the primary figure so that the loosely mounted members will backwardly toward the primary figure.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN o. MILLER.
